What's the current plan for the south part of King? I can't remember. Personally I would like cutting it down to one lane, have similar parking as now and maybe have the one lane that European thing where there's no curb (can't remember the term). Then extend the patios.

Plan is to close the south part of King to all forms of motor vehicles. The city is wrapping up plans and needs to finalize it by the end of Fall or early Winter. They'll be a final Open House with the perferred option presented in September 2009. Once the McNab terminal is re-opened the city can prepare for construction in October 2010.

why the wood deck? How long will that last? Is that to keep the trees? Bc it takes a long time for trees to make a canopy like that. Maybe they could use that fake pvc wood.

Does Kathy Drewitt still prefer a parking lot? lol

That's what I was thinking. I would like to see the water jets. But that's def too progressive.... they'll never happen.

Hey, I lived in Bangladesh for 10 years!
I'd definitely rather my wife walk around downtown Hamilton than Dhaka. But Dhaka would be fine too... most parts of it, anyway.

The city wants to hear what you think about making the area around Gore Park more pedestrian-friendly.

The Gore Master Plan was prompted by the pending removal of buses on the south leg of King Street East, leaving the area around the park open for a revamp. The buses will move to a new facility on MacNab Street.

The area under review falls within the area of James and Catharine streets, to the north edge of Gore Park and the southern side of the sidewalk along the south leg of King Street East.

Three sessions will be held Sept. 9 to gather community input and comments about what should be done. Displays of preliminary plans will also be available.

The first session will take place from noon until 2 p.m. in Gore Park. There will be no formal staff presentation, but the display boards will be set up and staff will be there to answer questions. Two other sessions will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 150 King Street East, in room Pavilion A, Level 3. The first runs from 3-5 p.m., with a presentation at 3:30 p.m. The second goes from 6-8 p.m., with a presentation at 6:30 p.m.

I think it's a good day for the open house, they'll be out at Gore Park during the middle of the weekday (Wednesday) so HSR passengers will see the displays and might give advice. Plus lunch hour break they can pop over and see the displays as well. The rest is during the evening.

They don't take our input into account. I think its a legal formality that they do these public sessions. It doesn't mean they have to do anything with the results. Besides have results EVER been made public after one of these public consulting charades? I'd like to see some sort of number crunching, what the suggestions were, what was parts were liked etc

I remember the huge charrette the city had several years ago. Ideas from this were to be used for designing the city in the future. Everything was covered from transit, building uses, parks. etc. the models were temporarily on display in Jackson Sq.

Not one thing was implemented from it

There are some good things proposed in this. When you get past the poor spelling and awkward grammar.

I like the newsstand kiosk (spelled newstand) and the divisions of the park. Victoria Sq, Central Garden, Performance Sq etc. Notice the planned lay-by at the "Royal Connaught Forecourt". I guess the better change that since it won't be a hotel.

I can't decide. I like #3 Grand Plaz concept but i like the "speakers corner" idea from #2. "Celebration Stage" is a great idea. I starting to like the idea of redoing Gore. I just get worried whenever the City tries to do ANYTHING

Well you do need to separate the public from a highway, don't you? King Street needs to be made 2-way as part of any successful redesign.

That section falls under the rapid transit study, that study overtook the already planned King Street West streetscape plan. Had there been no rapid transit study King Street West would be under construction right now, which would turn King West 2-way traffic (2009).

The businesses along the south side are going to boom. It is hard to imagine how quiet and pedestrian friendly this area will be. Quite a contrast to the majority of the downtown where sidewalks are only wide enough for single file in both directions. I imagine that in time the north side of the street will also benefit from this area once it becomes a "destination". However, there will be a strong demand for street parking along all the surrounding streets. After the park is complete, the one-way street model for King and Main will make even less sense than it did before...
