Phase 1 ticket inventory for 2010 Olympic Winter Games going, going, gone

Dec 12, 2008

Additional tickets to go on sale in mid 2009

Vancouver, BC – A mere five hours after they were re-released for sale today, the remaining available tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games in the Priority Access Period have been sold, reported the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC) this afternoon. The next phase of Vancouver 2010 ticket sales will occur in mid-2009. VANOC will begin selling tickets to the Paralympic Winter Games on May 6, 2009. VANOC is continuing to work with tickets.com on an authorized ticket resale program where people will be able to offer their tickets for sale, and customers will be able to buy with confidence knowing tickets are legitimate. Further details will be announced later in 2009.

“Once again, we have been amazed by the interest and support shown by Canadians in tickets to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games,” said Caley Denton, VANOC vice-president ticketing and consumer marketing. “Our website was overwhelmed today and we want to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and patience. We encourage anyone who wants tickets in the future to sign up for updates at www.vancouver2010.com.”

The tickets today were only available to Canadians who requested tickets in Phase 1 of sales, which ended November 7. The Priority Access Period was originally scheduled to run from today to December 22. Earlier this week, VANOC invited ticket account holders to sign into their ticket account at www.vancouver2010.com to find out what tickets they had received from their earlier requests this fall. These same ticket buyers had the exclusive right to buy remaining tickets on a first-come, first-served basis starting today at 9 a.m. (Pacific Time).

So are the mid 2009 tickets another opportunity for in-demand tickets or just random stuff?

I have a great good news story.

I commented in this thread on the day of the second chance purchase about an incident I had getting errors and the ticket website crashing as I attempted to complete a purchase of a couple of tickets after failing to get anything from a pretty large request during the initial lottery and after waiting for over an hour in the "virtual waiting room."

Well, last week I had spoken to a representative to follow-up on the "we got your message" confirm email they had sent regarding my query. The representative on that call was extremely nice but essentially had explained that all the systems had been overloaded the morning of the remaining ticket sales and even representatives such as herself had encountered errors at times when trying to process phone orders from callers on their understandably jammed phone lines. She was apologetic but explained my order had not processed completely and no tickets had been allocated to me for the event.

I had half-way expected that response since I knew the system had failed prior to providing a final confirmation.

Well, out of the blue, I received a call yesterday from a supervisor who confirmed the basics of my original email and actually re-processed my order for the event during our call. I was truly impressed my report had not simply been closed based on my conversation with them last week. Either the representative I had spoken with last week had escalated the issue or they had a system in place to review all the issues raised to do what they could to resolve them. The supervisor explained they do have a small buffer for just such circumstances so he was able to secure two tickets to the event I had been attempting when the errors occurred.

He provided me a confirmation during our call, and I received an email confirmation within minutes of our call. Now I can log into the ticket account and see our two tickets.

I never thought I could be so happy getting 2 standing area tickets for a preliminary alpine event I've only ever seen on TV on occasion. I'll probably be an expert on all the competitors by the time the day arrives ; ).

I just wanted to share our experience, and give kudos where due. The ticketing team turned a very disappointing experience into an amazingly positive one for me.

US, Aussie Olympic tickets nearly sell out

Canadians who had to contend with the convoluted lottery system the Vancouver Organizing Committee used to allocate tickets to the 2010 Games will have some sympathy for their American and Australian counterparts.
This week CoSport, Vanoc’s authorized ticket agent for a number of countries, announced results of lotteries it conducted in the US and Australia. No one who witnessed the Canadian lottery system will be surprised to discover that tickets in the US and Australia were also in short supply. See the story here.
I suppose it’s a happy place for Vanoc to be when many of its 170 events are so oversubscribed that the only way to fairly allocate tickets is by lottery.
However, try telling that to those who came out of the lotteries empty-handed, without even so much as a nosebleed seat to a hockey game. Over the last month I’ve been regularly called by people angry either that they didn’t get any tickets, or that they got tickets to events they didn’t really want but applied for in the hope of increasing their odds of getting something, anything.
It turns out that Americans and Australians have had a similar experience. Demand in both countries was so high that Jet Set Sports, the sister company to CoSport, injected thousands of tickets from its own sponsor allocation.
Caley Denton, Vanoc’s vice-president of ticketing, said Tuesday that’s because Vanoc couldn’t fill all the requests made by national Olympic Committees. Even the Canadian Olympic Committee didn’t get all the tickets it wanted.
Vanoc will produce about 1.6 million tickets, with 70 per cent of them going to the public. Of that, less than 30 per cent of that 70 per cent will go to people outside of Canada, he said. The vast majority has been reserved for Canadians, and he allowed that Vanoc could easily have sold more tickets for higher prices if it had chosen to.
You can find details of CoSport’s American and Australian ticket sales here.
On a related note, my friend Peter Morgan over at Morgan News: 2010, an industry newsletter, noted that while CoSport says it used a “reputable, worldwide audit and tax firm to oversee the effectiveness of the lottery”, it wouldn’t identify the firm.
"Based on our agreement with the auditing firm, we are unable to release the name of the firm.,” he said was CoSport’s emailed reply to his query as to the identity of the auditors.
"The company also refused to disclose whether it was the auditing firm, CoSport, its parent firm or Jet Set Sports that placed the gag clause in the agreement, or whether the firm had any connection to VANOC. To those questions, the spokesman will only say, "We are unable to provide this information to the public." CoSport said initially it hired the firm "to ensure fairness and transparency during the lottery process."
Denton told me that Vanoc used Deloitte to independently audit the Canadian lottery. He didn’t know who CoSport used.
Last September Vanoc signed Deloitte as an official supplier of professional services.

2010 Games tickets all snapped up

Canwest News Service
March 10, 2009 7:02 PM

OTTAWA — Every event at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games is sold out, more than 11 months before the opening ceremony, said John Furlong, chief executive officer for the Vancouver Organizing Committee.

“We know people are coming and they’re coming from every village and town you can imagine,’’ Furlong said during a speech to the Canadian Club of Ottawa at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier on Tuesday.

“Even in the downswing of the economy, which has clearly happened in the last couple of months, our merchandise program is doing extremely well. Canadians are celebrating this. They’re looking forward to it and supporting it.”

When tickets went on sale last October, they brought in $345 million in five weeks. In Salt Lake City in 2002, tickets were available for nine weeks, bringing in only $78 million. As expected, hockey was the most sought-after event in Vancouver.

“When we put the tickets out there for the public, we were astonished at the interest,” Furlong said. “We took 144,000 orders for 4,000 gold-medal hockey tickets we had for sale.”

Thanks to government and corporate support, the Vancouver organizing committee now has 98 per cent of funds needed to stage the games, he says.

Construction is finished on athletic facilities, but the organizing committee is concerned there may not be enough hotel accommodation for the anticipated number of visitors.

“We have the unique challenge of having far too many people wanting to come than we have accommodation for. We are now developing a strategy so that every head has a pillow in Vancouver.”

Furlong’s speech was interrupted for nearly 30 seconds by one protester chanting, “No Olympics on native stolen land.”

But they said the remaining 10% of the tickets would be sold in May?

Whatever, if I can't get a ticket a few days before an event, I won't bother going. How can someone know what they are doing more than an year in advance?

Phase 3 Tickets go one sale tomorrow morning at 10AM PST. Here's what the Vancouver2010 website says about those tickets:

Quote:
The Vancouver 2010 ticketing site is currently closed for maintenance in preparation for Phase 3 of the Olympic and Paralympic ticket program which begins Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 am (Pacific Time). The site will reopen at that time.

More than 100,000 tickets to all city events including gold medal hockey, curling, Opening and Closing and nightly Victory Ceremonies events will be available to the Canadian public on a first-come, first served basis. Paralympic tickets for high-demand events such as the Opening Ceremony, ice sledge hockey and alpine skiing will also be available.

This is also the last chance for spectators to purchase tickets in time to receive the highly collectable, full-colour and oversize tickets that prominently display Vancouver 2010 pictograms, sport and venue illustrations. The tickets are currently being printed and the window for purchasing these special tickets closes November 20.

The full men's and women's hockey and curling schedules are available at vancouver2010.com. The curling draw includes all medal round matchups and preliminary competitions that feature Team Canada in nine of 12 sessions. Tickets are also available for all hockey games, including high-demand medal rounds in both men's and women's draws.

Tickets to Whistler events will not be on sale during Phase 3 because the Olympic bus network (OBN), the transport system for spectators originating in Metro Vancouver, has reached maximum capacity in Whistler.

›››Visit vancouver2010.com to learn more about the 2010 Winter Games including sport information, the Competition Schedule and ticket prices.

I fail to see how ANY opening ceremony or gold medal game tickets could exist.

Something tells me they are just *saying* that, so you go on and decide to buy curling tickets instead.

I'm hoping because they haven't released all of those gold medal game/opening ceremony tickets. I'm hoping some short track tickets are available too.

The extra tickets are those given back from sponsors, therefore, there will be some for every event.
