^ Calling it "nicely designed" is pretty generous, I'd say. It's OK design to me. Checks off most of the right boxes, but doesn't wow.

In any case, it's pretty clear that "mixed-use" is still lost on us.

Quick update from today...

Epcor about a third of the way to topped out:

Alberta Hotel site, still not much up, just clearing away the brick pathways:

And AGA. The hoarding is gone, and you can really get a sense of the street-level interaction this thing is going to have. I already love this thing to bits and I am loving it more and more every time I see it. Really getting excited now...

Thanks Bulliver. I like the different view of the tower from the west side

So now that Calgary is out of the World Expo race... Edmonton should really really focus on kicking it up a notch....

I believe at one point Ken said something in regards to the first glazing on Epcor going up around the end of October, anyone know if this is still the plan?

I'm so glad to see progress on the Alberta Hotel, yes the park was nice but we can improve the other parks in the area. I think it could be possible to move the concrete planters to other parks in the area.

Good god, the AGA is going to look better in the winter than it will in summer!

An inner-city councillor is calling for action on a $30-million plan to spruce up a rundown stretch of downtown roadway.

"The great danger is we merrily do the plans, we get everybody excited about them and then they gather dust," said Ward 4 Coun. Ben Henderson.

"It's a really bad habit we have, and we have to get out of the habit.

"We actually have to start doing some of this stuff, and not just planning to do it."

The city has long eyed a complete reconstruction of 105 Avenue between 97 Street and 119 Street.

It would include road rehabilitation, streetscaping, landscaping and upgrades to the underground power and water lines.

The estimated cost, however, is $30 million -- too rich for the cash-strapped city.

A council report released yesterday says no work is planned along the avenue within the next five years.

But Kathy Barnhart, manager of neighbourhood and community development, said the timeline could be pushed up if there is enough demand.

"If, when we're working with communities along that stretch, this is a priority for them, and it would help them to achieve the revitalization in that area, we might be able to put some dollars to it sooner," she said.

The area includes the neighbourhoods of Central McDougall and Queen Mary Park.

Henderson said talk of a downtown arena in the area could kick-start the revitalization.

He said he's optimistic some of the roadwork could be done "in the next year or two" as work begins building the NAIT LRT line through the area.

This isn't the only streetscaping scheme the city is eying.

The city wants to spend $39 million sprucing up Jasper Avenue between 97 Street and 111 Street. It would include sidewalk improvements as well as new lighting, trees and benches.

The goal would be "recapturing Jasper Avenue's role as Edmonton's premier downtown street," officials said earlier.

While the estimated price tag for that project is about $39 million, the actual cost could vary by as much as 40%, according to officials.

This is a very drab industrial street, that is home to some very exciting projects (Macewan, Epcor, and a host of others) and could become a bit of a White ave north....so I like it.

take a look at the east end of the 3rd floor in bulliver's picture... you'll see more on a pretty regular basis as the lower floors are already "loaded":

aedarsa certification of the man and material hoist (which will use the balconies on the north face and not have to penetrate the curtain wall) also means we'll be able to quit hiking up and down 10 plus floors of stairs and scaffolding...

If you're referring to 105th Ave, I hope they shift focus to 107th Ave as it already has a lot of buildings built that could turn it into a neat strip. I doubt 105th or 107th are going to be Whyte Avenue north, but there seems to be some similarities between Whyte and 118th Ave's roots.

^ 107 Ave. already has streetscaping. The issues with that avenue run far, far deeper than chrome and polish.

105th ave is important because right now 105th acts like a bomb out war zone between downtown and the northside. There has been substainal growth in the area, but there is still a huge disconnect.

That's brutal. It's compromise-beige, our Municipal development color. And I thought that particular shade of blue went out in the early 90s. Did BKA find a hidden cache of paint somewhere?
