The baby's diaper brown paint being applied to 10 E. Delaware makes The Elysian flattering in comparison.

And the crown of Elysian looks more and more like a Shriner's cap every time I look at it. It needs a tassel.

Am I just missing something? Is there any relationship or continuity whatsoever between Elysian, 10 E Delaware, and the surrounding context, from either a form or aesthetic standpoint? I can almost spy something in the window/balcony treatments of the two U/C towers... almost.

It was mention a few times how the precast joints would be handled as it was being built. Even to my eye they have done really well with the caulking and the individual panels are virtually invisible.

I like it for what it is. It doesn't leave me with the impression that in 20 years you wish it had never been built. It will just blend in with the hood and live a happy existence.

i dont see how anybody likes these kind of buildings. If you like "french old world charm" live in like a 5 story highrise not a skyscraper...they just dont work, it looks so kitschy...
it wouldnt look nearly as bad if the mansard roof wasnt so huge.

Its not nearly as offensive from the top of the Hancock though. I was at the lounge last night and its comforting to know that nothing as offensive as Elysian will ever be able to dominate a beautiful beast like Hancock.

I like ‘Old World / Bordeaux’ French architecture, but not in this case. The proportions of the building get more awkward as you go higher; and then you hit that fez hat of a crown. If skyscrapers were people this one would be wearing a robe holding a cigar in one hand and a glass of gin in the other; sitting by a fireplace surrounded by endless bookshelves.

I’ll take a pass on this one.

The 'mansard' roof is hideous. I cringe every time I see it.
A 3rd grader could design a better top than that.

…..I was more so envisioning an early 60’s Rolls Royce, but that could work too….

Well stated (except that it isn't really ‘Old World / Bordeaux’ French architecture).

I also agree that it does not detract from the great JHC; I just returned home after a week in Chicago and was pleased to see that this creation is not as offensive on the scene as a whole as I thought that it might be.

I think you mean Second Empire not "Bordeaux", but anyway.

No, this style does not work for skyscrapers - the proportions are all wrong. Of course that the style isn't well executed either doesn't help.

Yeah, but you don't have to live in this hood, or even next door to it or know the kind of architecture that defines this hood.

I haven't heard good comments about it either, and these are from people who have no clue about architecture, but were so unimpressed by the faux limestone cladding they had to comment. The precast exterior is always the first issue quickly followed by the "dunce cap" top.

I don't take up issue with the overall design paper. I was happy with the renderings from the beginning, but once the exterior went up it quickly fell apart in my eyes.

Are you another one of those on this forum that seems to think opinions of visual interest are wrong because things aren’t done by the book?

If I like the completed look I will comment on it and your opinion or the ones living in the hood are insignificant to what I think of the building.
