The emptiness of the underground portion came in handy for once. I was on the phone with this girl and the rink provided me with a sudden and private break from the street level chaos where everyone can hear what im saying and drown me out. hahaha

Now that's lovely. Thank goodness they're evergreen, otherwise you might see the glass domes in the winter.

... although there is always the possibilty that they're waiting for them to reach a certain size and density, then trim them short. (wishful thinking on my part, I'm afraid) Too bad they couldn't have had bubbling water or rows of fountains.

I just don't get it. They had these cool new domes with some neat lighting, and now make it all but invisible to people walking by. WTF??? Just don't understand the planners intentions here.

I guess they wanted some sort of barrier there, otherwise you'd see drunks climbing onto the domes... Better hedges than a wall or fence, although you might be able to put up some nice looking iron work allowing people to at least see through.

If the City wants to keep people off of the domes, away from the water, and out of the bushes, then it should just erect huge, 10-metre high walls around all of Robson Square so that nobody and nothing can possibly enter.

It would be more of a safety issue with the domes. Notice the big drop off... By law you'd need something to indicate to people to not go beyond.

You mean besides the one large glass wall and the half-glass / half-stone wall that sit between the sidewalk and the dome (which the hedges are planted between)? If people don't get the message from the walls, why is the hedge going to stop them? Does it indicate something the two glass walls don't? Thank goodness they don't use that logic with the balconies on my building or people would be tumbling over them constantly.

I know you are probably correct about the requirement, but it's a stupid requirement. And why not just have a few visible signs that say "DO NOT ENTER" or "STAY OUT" on one of the two glass walls to fulfill that requirement. I'd rather see that than have the entire visibility blocked as they've done now.

What is the city trying to do, quell the view of the enchantment that is winter skating to Olympic tourist bystanders? Not to mention the fact that the architectural merit of the domes is one of the most noteworthy in recent memory.

Once again city planners reaffirm the notion of being complete and utter fools.

I never did figure out what this crane was for. General 'lifting and moving' I guess.

I was kinda freaked that the trees along Hornby might be subject to accidental damage but all is well.

The wooden clamshell would have worked much better, but the media (and a few forumers here even) essentially peed all over it -- and now we're stuck with the same pathetic set-up.

Couldn't the City have flown just one planner to Rockefeller Center to see how to make a square like this work? Not my obstructing it with shrubs, domes, pagodas and concrete!

Must've been Mr. X. Great photos but "The Best Place On Earth" is really ugly and not necessary.

Yeah, and corny and provincial-sounding, too. BTW, weren't people talking about getting rid of those pagodas, and . . . . providing a link to the Canada Line / Pacific Centre?

Were that done, and brighter lighting put in at the lower levels of Robson Square, it might just bring it back to life.
