It's not about being lazy... well it is, but it's more about making it more accessible and easier for the general public. People aren't very smart and I've had a few times where I had to direct commuters transferring at Columbia.

I have to say though transiting in Vancouver is generally easier than at other cities, in Taipei, many of their transfers are like transferring from VC Canada Line Station to Granville Station where you have to do it on the street. In New York, up until now, it's really hard to know which train you are riding.

^You know, the same old before construction of any major transit projects: 8 houses on Clarke Rd will have to be expropriated and demolished to make way for the Evergreen Line. Looks like those homes are in the way for the tunnel portal.

apparently it includes 2 or three new ones built just recently =O

That's a shame.

I sort of wonder if they could shuffle Clarke Road to the left side and squeeze in the tunnel portal to the east.

I think it all comes down to what is the cheapest. To change the design to a possibly more complicated an expensive design, our to simply properly compensate the people who own the few houses that need to be removed.

It has to be angled quite a bit (relative to Clarkson), so that it can fit. We don't know how deep the foundations/buildings above go into the ground, and so it would be hard to maintain existing buildings above while building the platform since the platforms would have to be directly underneath the building. Looking from the perspective of Fourth St & Clarkson St (Google StreetView Link), you can see that existing building above the proposed platform is an old apartment complex. There are a few metres before the edge of Clarkson St, but doesn't look like there is enough.

Having Platform 3 level to Platform 2 would also require a transfer of going down and up the stairs from Platform 3 to Platform 1, and vice versa.

I'm thinking a little deeper?

What about going a level deeper with the 3rd platform at columbia, ie on the concourse level. Either have it beneath the existing rails so you can even have two sided unloading/loading or along the northside as was suggested earlier but deeper. Plus this way you only have one staircase to deal with no matter what your transfer happens to be. Dont know if these ideas are feasible/can be done, but my thoughts anyways.

Maybe we should step away from the hypothetical for a while and let's discuss actual. The following two links are the most recent info and should give lots to talk about. Cheers.

These have just be released to the public. Hope some of you attend the open houses.

The question is how can you do such a project without closing the station. Afterall, we want to minimize disruption.

Haha. I didn't have a chance to go, but it was on the news.

From the Discussion Guide:

Improved Movement within the Station
Consistent signage and system maps
I thought this was rather funny. Do we ever get this right?

While I feel sorry for some of these homeowners, it's for the better good of society. You just have to accept it.

I always think that land expropriated by the government should be bought not just for its value but its value and then a little some more. It's a tough situation to be caught in, to have to move out....i couldn't imagine having to move out of the home i grew up my entire life.

Only 8 families would be forced to leave? it is lower number than I expect. And luckily it is Canada, at least they will get compensated fully, compared to ultra-sad situation of up to 1 million displaced in Shanghai for infrastructure construction (incl. world largest subway system soon) for World Expo 2010.

The gas station and the restaurant beside it would have to go as well. Not sure if they are included in that number. The diagram shown in the discussion document shows the track headed towards the portal there..

^ 1-million??? That's ridiculous. And I thought Beijing's "Olympic Green" Park, where the National Stadium and water cube, was bad with 300,000 evicted.

Here's a quick sketch.. I believe one of the buildings is a condo complex - not sure how many dwellings are there. I don't think the artist's rendering is terribly accurate, however, so it's a guess at best.

Doh, forgot about street view..

the complex I'm thinking of must be a few blocks up the street, I don't see it near the portal site.
