Which brown gray building? The one next to 7WTC? Wow, it really is hard to spot a short building in this city nowadays.

These ‘commie block’ buildings also do a great job of making the WFC shine like the gem it is. It’s like sticking a Bentley between two 1980’s Toyotas. Sacrifice surroundings (which are actually beautiful at ground level) to show off beauty.
Huh?

I was not criticizing Battery Park City as a whole, I actually called Battery Park City's buildings nice. BPC is a cute little neighborhood, red bricks and all. In general, I usually dislike red brick, but it works in Battery Park City.

I was specifically talking about this disgusting brown thing:

That does not look Battery Park City at all. It looks slummy and sticks out like a sore thumb in such a cute well kept neighborhood and totally ruins the picture. It needs to come down!

In the "old" days, I didn't really like BPC too much. I thought it was to sterile and clean, didn't feel like the real Manhattan neighborhoods it was supposed to invoke. Only the promenade saved it. But over the years, it has grown into its own (and suffered through some devastation of 9/11). But a I now appreciate the neighborhood and the working of the World Financial Center as its centerpiece. The Goldman just adds another connection to the rest of Manhattan.

i hate BPC and probably always will... like NYGUY said, the only redeeming quality is the waterfront. everything else is, like NYGUY said, sterile and oddly feels suburban :S

BPC does feel very suburban, I agree. Like a gated suburban community actually.

I still think it's a very cute/attractive/sparkling clean..or sterile. It seems like a place for families.

Exactly. I think BPC's purpose is to house a getaway from all the business in Lower Manhattan. There are hardly any condominiums down there, so the residential space just levels out the community. Hate it if you will, but Battery Park City wouldn't have existed if the World Trade Center wasn't excavated. It's a win-win situation.

Btw I think that building you mentioned does look like an eyesore, but unfortunately it was probably built before the World Financial Center, and they didn't use glass as a cladding method. I think re-cladding it would drastically change it's appearance.

^^^It was probably one of the first things to be built in BPC. I was also wondering if there has been anything in Battery Park that has been demolished or replaced, considering the area is so new.

I actually lived in Battery Park City (on Rector Place to be exact) and loved it. Agreed, it is not your typical Manhattan neighborhood... but what is really? Having previously resided in Morningside Heights, Hell's Kitchen/Upper West Side, Hamilton Heights, and Lower East Side/East Village, I can confidently attest that the cleanliness/quiet factor was more than welcomed by me. I understand how it's not how Manhattan is supposed to look (whatever that means), but it was a great place to live. Calling it suburban is completely ridiculous, guys.

Goldman Sachs a company? That's being too kind. How about evil empire of greed? Calling this tower Greed Plaza or Corporatocracy Center would be quite fitting.

This building is good enough that I can justify covering my ears and going "LA LA LA LA" whenever someone mentions it's for GS.

The pedestrian area looks quite different from this summer. Perhaps once I can enjoy the finished area next summer my opinion will change.

What are they doing to that large median in between the roads? Landscaping it?

That's West Street. It's been undergoing it's own redevelopment the last few years. It's eventually supposed to be less of a highway, and more of a "grand' boulevard at this stage, becoming more pedestrian friendly.
