Skyscraper Design Keeps Birds Up in the Air

"...Studio Gang Architects has earned a PETA Proggy award for using bird-deflecting elements in the Aqua Tower residential building and hotel. By including an undulating exterior and specifying the use of fritted glass--which is etched with gray marks to make it easier for birds to see--the company has created a design that will help prevent birds from flying into windows. Magellan Begins Condo Deliveries At $475M Aqua

"...We have in effect a village in the heart of the city, as opposed to a single building, and people like that because we're giving them a unique community and amenity package," Joel Carlins, co-CEO of Magellan Development, tells GlobeSt.com. "We're ahead of most of the other markets and haven't had the same impact from the recession..."

"...Beginning on floor 53, the condos range in size from studio to three bedrooms, average around 1,200 square feet and have sold for about $525 per square foot. Carlins says 240 of the 262 units, or about 92%, have been sold, and sales are continuing with contracts pending on two more units. Designed by Jeanne Gang of Studio/Gang Architects, the Aqua building is also hoped to gain LEED certification..."

"...On floors 19 to 52, the 474-unit apartment component offers studios and one, two and three bedroom rental units averaging around 1,300 square feet, with rental rates ranging from $1375 to $3111. "Our rentals at Aqua are also going fabulous," Carlins says. "We started May 1 renting, and we're already 60% preleased..."

"...CVS/pharmacy has signed on with a 20-year lease to anchor the 37,000-square-foot retail component of the tower with a 12,000-square-foot ground level location. Magellan will take nearly all of the development's 40,000 square feet of office space. The developer has still yet to name the hotel which is planned to bring up to 310 rooms into space below floor 19, Magellan has said. Having been in discussions with several hotels to fill the spot, Magellan expects to announce a deal in the near future..."

That's one thing Chicago has on NYC: rental costs. Not trying to turn this into a vs. thread, I'm just trying to decide which one to move to in a few years and the cost of rent is the thing weighing heaviest on my mind. Argh. I love them both so much.

Update released by Magellan 10/1/09:

"...continuing to work with city inspectors to achieve occupancy through floor 59 in the coming weeks. Dry-wall is now installed through floor 75 and moving up! 30-day notice of closing have been sent out through floor 59. Planters are being installed today at the residential lobby entrance of Aqua as well as the South Plaza..."

"...Casteel Coffee is NOW OPEN in the Aqua Lobby! Magellan Development is proud to announce the opening of a Casteel Coffee kiosk...featuring all Fair Trade coffees, including their NEW Fair Trade Aqua espresso blend. In addition to the fresh roasted coffees, they will be offering teas, pastries, as well as sandwiches and salads provided by The Goddess and Grocer..."

I'm trying to ID the Porsche model based on the headlights and rear wing. I believe it's a 2002-2004 911 996 Carrera Cabriolet w/ Aerokit. Or it could be a Turbo wing it's to hard to tell because the tree is blocking the view of the wing, but the rims indicate it's not a turbo.
