So, Atlanta has a 10.2% unemployment rate which is above the national average of 9.7% salt lake city just barely hit 6% and is slightly lower then the rest of the state. So in regards to unemployment we are definitely more stable then Atlanta. Unfortunately they are FAR more educated then we are. 28% of SLC's metro population over 25 has a bachelors where as 33% of Atlanta's metro population over 25 and 39.9% of Atlanta proper has at least a bachelors.
So 33% to 28% - not that great a discrepancy. I also think that because of all the major companies in Atlanta, it's necessary to have a higher degree. The more major companies in SLC, the higher amount of degrees. I think five decent Universities within a 50 miles radius of Salt Lake will go a long way.

Does anyone know where the post is that showed all the new tallest highrises proposed? They had all of them shown lined up from tallest to smallest. That would be great to have that added to the first page of this thread. We could add a note about the Green Bro highrise. Though, I think it is the same one as the Mystery Glass Tower on the SE corner of 1st and Main.

Is this what you are talking about?
I made this list of highrise projects about two years ago.

Here's also this list. But this one is older and more out of date.

UPDATE:
Two co-workers and I went to the site of the proposed 32-42 story skyrise today. There are not as many buildings on the site as we traditionally thought, there are only three, so this might help to move the process along faster. The next meeting is still set for mid December.

Can someone label all (or some) of the buildings on those lists?

Thanks Projects for resurrecting that! Where were those hiding anyways? I have been searching all over the place for those. Do you have the label information that accompanied it? ie. #1 is Mystery Glass Tower. #2 is ...

I think I am more in favor of a 32 story skyrise rather than 42 for two reasons:

1) A 42 story skyrise will stick out like a sore thumb

2) We could use that extra ten stories of office demand to help get another highrise started. ie. the proposed tower on NE corner of State and 1st.

Plus, I would rather spread that density out to create more street life in the city. I would much rather have shorter highrises and a better streetscape/pedestrian experience than taller highrises and less streetscape/pedestrian experience. ie. European cities have a very goood street presence and not very many highrises.

Well, it there are 3 buildings on the site then that eliminates the SE corner of Main and 100 S the NE corner of State and 100 S or the NE corner of State and 4th.

It could be the NW corner of State and 200 S, Carl's Jr, old beto's/eat a burger and the smoke shop or the building north of the old beto's.

It also doesn't sound like it will be on the old Zephyr corner, only one building in the way there.

I would guess that the 32 vs 42 will simply come down to how much of the corporate office they plan on bringing to Salt Lake City and how much additional space they are wanting to lease out in order to lower the overall cost of the building and being able to recoup some of the costs.

I am simply guessing but I would imagine they have a % of leasable space based on needed square footage and the more they need the more leasable space they will want to build.

I could be totally up in the night on this, I've never built my own corporate tower.

This site is in the CBD is big enough for a highrise and has three buildings on it.

This is Carl's Jr, the pawn shop and the smoke shop.

^^^ It's also possible it is the south west corner of 100 s. and Main. The Zions bank building and the two small buildings just south of that make three, and that would be a very valuable piece of property for a new tower considering its proximity to Main St., Trax, and CCC... they may not value that Zions Bank building as much as we locals.

Not necessarily. Look at that corner again. You could take out the Bennion Jewelers building, the old Trib building, and the building to the south of that. I remember that PRI, now CCRI, bought that corner back in 2006. I'm not sure how much of that corner they bought. (I'm sure someone could dig up something about that) And, from my work, I was privileged to know about the Mystery Glass Tower before they decided not to show it for the big City Creek Center presentation in Oct. '06. Take a look at how wide the Mystery Glass Tower is.

On a side note, I'm not sure why PRI bought that corner and not the SW corner with its vacant parking lot and the tiny bank building. I would much rather have someone develop on that corner than the Bennion Jewelers corner. We don't need to demolish any more interesting buildings.

All of the buildings that are on the East side of State Street are great. They need to build about 15 more of those type of buildings that are 12-15 stories around downtown.

I wish SLC's downtown and city center was something like Paris meets Portland, OR. With skiny roads, older preserved buildings, and very dense throughout the area.

My personal opinion is that I think that the proposed tower will be 32 stories.

Nah, I don't think a 42 story building would stick out enough to look awkward. Every skyline has a few buildings that rule over the whole skyline, we already have a number of skyrises around 30 stories, a 32 story building would just add to the boring bunch. Unless a skyscraper is built taller than everything else, the skyline will never grow upwards, so it has to happen sooner or later. In this particular case, it doesn't look like 32 vs. 42 would make any difference as far as street-level density. The company is (supposedly) moving a lot or all of its operations here, which will determine the height of the skyscraper. It doesn't sound like they're interested in splitting up between multiple buildings.

I'll tell you now that they are going to stay in one building. I actually want it to be 32 stories.
