If YVR wants more flights like this, then they should engage in their own PR campaign soliciting open skies so that the public and the media get up in our MP's faces about this. The handful of people here that understand what is going on is going to make no impact. Of course, we could all organize a bit better and get more people involved, but that should wait until the UBC skytrain extension is underway.

But seriously, why don't we get organized?

This is a case where public pressure does need to be exerted on the federal government. It is inexcusable that Vancouver and West Coast travellers are being forced to subsidize the white elephant that is Pearson Airport, by being forced to connect through YYZ en route to various European and US destinations.

In the past 12-24 months, we have lost direct flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, Osaka and more -- while Toronto has faced virtually no cuts. And no, Toronto-Rome doesn't count.

If Toronto even thinks that I would fly to their stupid airport to get to Europe. They surely are stupid.

It is hours and hours quicker to fly directly to London and catch a connecting flight from there than it is to fly to Toronto and onto your destination in Europe

Assuming there is no direct flight from Vancouver to your final destination airport.

I've seen this silliness on other sites such as airliners.net, too.

You do realize, of course, that Singapore Airlines serves all North American west coast hubs via a third country, right? They serve SFO via HKG and LAX via Tokyo. I would guess these are far more lucrative markets than Canada. Strangely enough, though, the US doesn't seem to have the same problems that Canada has with this arrangement.

3x per week SIN-ICN-YVR simply didn't make sense economically and so SQ suspended the route.

It's Vancouver's loss.

I agree with you in an overall sense, Deasine, but what people CAN do about it is to write in large numbers to their MP's and SCREAM !! The say one letter is worth four (4) votes, and if enough letters are sent to enough MP's in Otaawa, those folks might just take notice and react. . . (although that's
wishful thinking, I will admit).

BUT IT'S WORTH A TRY! ! WHAT HAVE WE GOT TO LOSE, THE WAY THINGS ARE NOW??

Having more kids and growing our population to the point where Ontario and Quebec are quite small to us. Would truly help us in the long run.

Arrow Write to the Minister of Transport . . .

The Honourable John Baird.
It's his job to oversee things like this.

His direct email adress: [email protected]

Surely there must be someone who has something to say to this dude.

Better yet, write your MP and ask them to lobby - they do actually pay a lot of attention when you have something cohesive to say.

Good point. Thanks for that clarification. I hope people WILL write to their MP's about this. If the trend continues unabated, we'll be a second-tier airport in ten years.

I would suspect that Vancouver is not the only Canadian city losing traffic to an American City. The Federal Government needs to re asses the taxes & fees that the airlines are charged th8us dealing withe the price discrepancy between flying out of Canada (YVR) & the U.S. (SEA) It costs twice as much to fly from Vancouver to Miami & Frankfurt as it does out of Seattle.

In that case, how do we get onto the Canadian feds and slap some sense into them? Don't they know the damage they're doing?

What measures can we take? Any ideas, anybody? Somethin's gotta give ! ! Fast ! !

Don't worry, the industry has noticed.. and I think it is making efforts to lobby. There are airports on the US side of the line with similar distances outside of Toronto (Buffalo) and Montreal (some airport just inside of New York) - so hopefully something happens.

Whew, that's reassuring! I just hope you're right. Otherwise, we'll have to "take it to the streets," and get our MPs to do the lobbying for us. The
whole protectionsit / restrictionist gig by the feds is pitiful.

No. However, I respect the fact that Air Canada and its affiliates are one of Greater Vancouver's top 6 employers, and see no reason to beggar my neighbours for the sake of some foreign company.

That's the USA's problem, not mine. Air Canada and Korean Airlines do a fine job of serving the Korea-Canada market. There's no reason for Singapore to serve it. If they can't make a go of Canada-Singapore than they really shouldn't be in that business.

Subsidized employment is AWESOME! Not.
