PS if i'm not mistaken, this is really, no fooling, the last day of the canada line thread.

One more canada line thread memory - the truly epic battles between Mr X and queetz about the merits of the canada line. I even remember queetz calling in to CBC radio expressing his dislike on the canada line (a guy with a tagalog accent rattling off stats and jargon explaining why lrt would be better). good times, eh, Mr X?

anyway, we'll see the c-line on the general vancouver transit thread!

You are wrong as it's going to be integrated after the end of this year, but since you brought up Mr. X and Queetz, that was quite funny.

The Canada Line thread will live to see another day (scratch that, three months) thanks to our "DEASINE WANTS TO UNPLUG MY CANADA LINE [GRANDMA] THREAD" initiative...a brief but effective childish rant.

In his opinion, I am an Arbutus corridor "creme de la creme" not wanting the line to be built there and because I live on the westside....even though i live 5-kms west of Arbutus.

Man oh man, that guy had ego issues...and i'd even go as far as calling him a cyber bully.

Regardless, my interest in urban planning and civic engineering is dwindling quickly now that the Canada Line is done.

If that is the average for all the days of operation, assuming there was the average of 77,000 per day before the bus integration on the 7, that mean around 88,000 per day since.

If that includes Saturday and Sunday, that is really good. I think the 100,000 target is the weekday average.

^^ That sounds like "Wally" (or something like that) @ SSC and called people living on Cambie Street the "creme de la creme" of upper class Vancouver West.
He was in Portland or somewhere though...

Do all the Canada Line stations have one exterior sign only (above the entrance)? No plans to add any more signs? A visitor getting off a bus at 41st & Cambie would likely not see the little station sign.

I was thinking the same thing. We can assume that saturday will be busier than Sunday. More people work so more commuters on Saturday.

But in regards to the subsidy and magic 100,000 number. What happens if lets say the week days end up at 110,000. But the weekends are only 70,000 each. That would give a weekly average of 98,571. So does that mean that translink ends up paying or does the contract say it is based on each day individually. In which case the week days are a bonus but the weekends are going to cost us.

^ I'm sure the contract is specific about what 100,000 means... I recall someone said the number is counted at King Edward station, but whether it was weekday only, I don't recall that being posted.

King Edward, talk about picking a station that will no where near have the ridership of a majority of other stations.

What? That can't be right. How would it be counted? So if I get on the line at Waterfront and get off at City Hall, I'm not counted? Even worse, if I get on the line at Waterfront and get off at YVR I'm also not counted, right?

That must be misinformation.

I recall that there are laser sensors at all of the stations.

I'm sure that the station will provide access to events held in the new Olympic center and events in Queen Elizabeth park.

The #25 & 33 routes provide constant influx of passenger into King Edward station. This station also has one of the larger share of walking-to passengers.

Overall the ridership rank of the Vancouver stations from what I 've seen :

Vancouver City Centre > Waterfront > Broadway-Cityhall > Oakridge > Langara > Marine Drive > King Edward >>>> Olympic Village

Canada Line ridership# from Translink
83,000 average
92,000 the highest day
79,000 the lowest

It's been running a little over a month and a half now and so far Translink officials say ridership on the Canada Line is exceeding expectations.

Spokesman Derek Zabel says within the next two years the system is expected to carry up to 100-thousand passengers a day.

Right now they are averaging about 83-thousand riders a day, but Zabel says that's been as low as 79-thousand, and as high as 92-thousand.

But that’s nothing compared to Skytrain which averages about 300 thousand riders a day.

Some of the early kinks have been worked out - stations now have exit signs after early complaints the words "Way Out" were confusing.

Anyone have pictures of the change from "Way Out" to "Exit"?

Ridiculous, really. I don't even know why they started with "Way Out" signs, as if that wasn't going to be confusing for riders

Anyways, they need to get their act together.

^ it's only a sticker. They can just replace it with another one.

But how is "Way Out" confusing for people? Most people can find their way out without looking at the signs. It's not like we have some mega stations here.

Here comes another "Canada Line hurts taxi business" story:

http://www.vancouversun.com/business/Can...xi+business+executive/2056103/story.html

Quote:
VANCOUVER - The new Canada Line is hurting the cab business in Vancouver.

Amrik Mahal, president of Black Top & Checker Cabs, said business has dropped 10 to 15 per cent since the Canada Line, the rapid transit line that runs from downtown Vancouver to Vancouver International Airport and Richmond, began operation on Aug. 17. Within certain areas of Vancouver, that percentage is even higher.

“Taxi drivers need three to four big trips a day, like Vancouver to the airport, to make any reasonable money for the day,” Mahal, who is also a driver, said Thursday. “Yesterday, I didn’t have any.”

Mahal said to his knowledge, though, drivers aren’t quitting the industry.

“We have to plug along, because the RAV Line [the original name of the Canada Line] is here to stay,” he said. “We’re not against the RAV Line, it’s part of the transportation system that improves the city, and we have to work with it. What we have to do is make the taxi more attractive to people.”

He said the advantages of travelling by cab is that passengers travel alone, and get door-to-door service without having to lug suitcases to the nearest Canada Line station.

“We have to give good service,” Mahal said.

John Palis, managing administrator for Yellow Cabs, said the number of trips to and from the airport are definitely down, but he said all his information is anecdotal, and he has no figures on the decline in fares.

“The drivers notice a little bit of a hit,” Palis said. “The overall airport run numbers have declined in September from August, so we do see a difference, but I don’t have the September numbers yet.”

Ranjit Virk of Time Limousine Service said business is down by five to eight per cent, but he doesn’t believe it has anything to do with the Canada Line because his company relies on weddings and events, not general transportation.

“Taxi companies are more affected by this,” said Virk, who attributed the drop in his business to the flagging economy.

At least they're realizing they need to improve their quality of service.

They have to or else they won't get paid. ProTransBC, at least the organization itself, is incredibly concerned about customer satisfaction not only from a profit stand-point, but they do want to make a good reputation. Most station attendants are quite helpful, yes there are a few that are like TransLink, but the training process that these staff has to go through is based a lot of delivering decent customer service. ProTransBC went further and properly trained the retail shop workers, something SkyTrain doesn't do.
