what is the maximum lane number in the widest part of this system? if they build this on top existing lanes and interchanges, this would be the most "confused" interchange i have ever seen...

I dont quite understand what this means.....but anyways, the widest portion is displayed in the renders we have already seen, the approach to the Cape Horn Interchange.

Just go to page 9 of this thread, and count the lanes in the rendering!

u have to change lanes before the interchanges, so you dont go the wrong way...and how many lanes r there, it's hard to change once u get close...

Well there will be plenty of signage to prepare drivers for these ramps before hand(one would think), and on major exits two lanes will be exiting, so you dont have to get over to the extreme right (only for some exits). It will work out, don't worry. Also, the pre-exit/exit lanes on this highway (because of the superior feeder and distributor system being put in place) are going to be a lot longer, so if one is paying attention (as they should on the freeway at its most pivotal interchange) they should be ok.

In general, there are 17 lanes in that stretch, but, 6 of those lanes are the Lougheed and 2 others are an off ramp, so only 9 are the actual highway itself.

PS - Lets hope they dont hire the same people from the Canada line to do the highway signage, haha! Tiny little print on the freeway signs...

vansky, there will be signs about 1200m and 600m before the interchange, giving you 45 and 22.5 seconds to get into the correct lane. Once you're in the correct lane, the interchange has been designed so there is no weaving or lane changing required, that's the beauty of the new interchange. It looks confusing in the rendering but when all is said and done we'll have one of the most well planned interchanges in Canada. Cape Horn Interchange as it is right now is a gong show.

Yeah, I am *not* going to miss going around that tight loop onramp behind a loaded semi.

I imagine that this is a detailed-design question, but does anyone know what the ramp speeds will be on the new capehorn? Especially the new high-level WB Lougheed to EB HWY1?

My guess is 70 as that is the speed limit on the Lougheed, increasing to whatever the speed limit is on the new bridge.

well planned... maybe... but it does seem to take up a huge chunk of space than before. = \

The preliminary drawings show Brunette interchange reconstructed.

Right now the north end of the bridge is right against the north side of Hwy 1. The new overpass would see the north side extended out... unless maybe they tunnel the WB offramp through.

I thought they had planned to install truck only ramps on douglas. Is that still in the plans or not.

The pre-design concept drawings have them, but the project fact sheet mentions nothing about it.

You know what? You're right! I've reviewed this preliminary drawing on numerous occasions and for whatever reason, I came to the conclusion that the Brunette underpass would not be rebuilt with the exception of a third lane clip-on along Brunette SB. And that was further re-inforced by the project fact sheet released yesterday.

In any event, the preliminary drawing (blown up to 300%) shows that two EB Hwy 1 lanes are shifted southward and that would not be possible with the existing structure. Furthermore, based upon the new bridge abutments, at least another 2 lanes on the south side and perhaps another 6 - 8 lanes on the north side could be installed.

So yeah, a future c/d system could extend all the way eastward to the Cape Horn interchange. Fancy that!

The new Brunette Interchange will look pretty cool with the new EB Hwy 1 off ramp fly-over. I am just wondering how they are going to be able to keep this interchange operating as they replace the primary bridge structure.

Huh now that I look at it more closely, they may indeed be shifting Hwy 1 southward, but it's pretty tight as it is, no? We'll have to see what the final design of the interchange is but the current overpass is just too narrow underneath to widen Hwy 1. It needs to be rebuilt, or there's some really expensive engineering going on.

Also the Wayburne Drive Overpass is no longer part of the project scope.

Probably because of infighting with the City of Burnaby. Do you think the Douglas off-ramps met the same fate?

Thats how we lost the 91A / 72nd interchange in the BIP.

Come on, if you're going to ram highway expansion down people's throats (i.e. those in Burnaby/Vancouver who don't want it), then ram down an interchange or two as well

As for the Brunette drawings, you guys are definitely right... the eastbound lanes are shifted southward too far for the current bridge columns to permit. There is an exit lane under the bridge that would be eliminated, but thats only one lane. Unless, the drawings ARE showing new ramps for all movements, so they must be converting the space that the exit lanes use on BOTH sides of the highway to regular lane space -- and virtually no shoulder. I've driven that stretch hundreds of times, and have previously thought that 8 lanes could be squeezed under the bridge.

ugh a wayburne overpass i pray that never happens (i live on dominion between wayburne and douglas)

i can support a douglas on/off ramp for commercial traffic though, douglas is already a pretty busy and is needed for the industrial area north of the trans-canada. However is it going to needed in 10 years? it seems like every year i look north from my house over to that area and newcondos seem to be popping up. ( i have no idea what the city has planned)

wayburne north of canada way should be kept as is minimal traffic.

Perhaps a second flyover is in the works for the WB offramp?? Or maybe they're replacing the EB flyover with a WB flyover (which makes just so much more sense) and making the EB offramp pattern turn left onto Brunette at a signalized intersection.

WB to Brunette NB will remain as is with it's own free flow lane.

This is the only way I can think of that they can retain the existing Brunette overpass as is.
