^ Agreed. The only question I have with the reach is how it relates to the island. The Arup/Kasian proposal has set of steps down from the bridge onto the island, I don't think this as been resolved with the reach. If it's shortlisted, like some of the other entries, I guess that detail will be addressed at that stage.

CtrlAltDel I think you need to work on your representation of the Infinity design.
The main cables have a parabolic curve much like a suspension bridge I would think. Also, the netting would be less visible and the main cables much more from a distance.

I personally feel that with the right lighting, it has the best postcard quality. To be honset the reach and the kasian sqiggles are quite low lying and won't even be visible from the rendered viewpoint.

Great work as usual C-A-D, great work on all the proposals. The glazing on the Bow looks supurb.

I hope Herald Square goes taller, remember there were two 63 storey towers proposed for that site in the 80's.

That's pretty much why I didn't want these posted in the official pedestrian bridge thread, as they wouldn't be entirely accurate. I might try and get the Infinity design better this weekend if I get a chance, as it's the trickiest. From this particular angle, your correct in stating that most of these bridges wouldn't be visible, or barely visible. Thank you for the input LynnDen!

And thanks for the comments, there is an updated rendering on the front page if anyone is bored!

CRANER; I agree, the only problem is it might be a while before a large office project would even be thought of. But ya, a 63 story Herald square would be OK with me, and a couple others! Also, a 60+ story version of LaCaille would work too.

if the jury for this competition selects a bridge based on its 'post card' image appeal, they will have made a huge mistake.

how can we actually take submisisons seriously that are proposing masts that are in at least one case 100m high!? that is the equivalent of a generous 30 storey building!

in the end, the winning team will need to be a team made up an engineer and an architect. its the best way to get the best result from the architectural and engineering standpoints.

You should see if you can update Stampede park in your 2030 pic by putting in the new Stampede drive and the Flames multipurpose arena and losing the dome

I'd like to see a future skyline rendering that only consists of buildings under construction just to get an idea of what the city is guaranteed to look like in, say, 3 years.

Agreed - but I can wait a while, we've had it very good in that regard the last 5 years (i.e. office buildings). Weather Herald Square is 50 or 63 storeys shouldn't affect the timing of the project.

are we "reaching" too far?

Just a few thoughts about the Halcrow-Yoles Reach design. It is a beautiful sketch but I'm curious how "real" it is and if it is possible to build. Using a metaphor to help inspire it's form is a smart idea but the hard part is making it buildable. I think there is a bridge in the design if i decipher the drawings properly? Having one tube stretch across the river may not be the appropriate answer since it will end up looking more like a massive sewer sized object versus the lightness of the sketches they show. The sectional sketch shows it's structure wrapping around the bridge deck but how does that work? what is it affixed to? Do spring ice flows hit it at all? I actually would ask that question of many of the designs. Bridges connect two things together (in this case three)... which of the designs pays attention to these important junction points? What happens there? The calatrava bridge poorly makes these connections and we should choose one that does.

You should probably post this in the bridge thread.

Like I said before, I don't think a structural engineer who designed the steel for the Bow tower will draw up a sketch that can't be done for a much simpler bridge.

The Delcan proposal is growing on me. It's elegant and has nice interaction with the island. Both Halcrow-Yolles proposals are winners as well.

Looking at all those photos makes me really hope the East Village redevelopment is a success and largely built out in 10-15 years - that land is soooo prime.

A unique angle by Regulator75 from the Southeast Industrial area.

End of 2011, the Bow and Eighth Avenue place should be completed

Beyond 2011....
