Brickyard Kohl's to open next week

Kohl's Department Stores said Wednesday that it will open its Brickyard store at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The store, at 1154 Brickyard Road, has created about 150 new jobs. It is the 12th Kohl's store in Utah and among 37 stores nationwide that the chain is opening this fall. Stores at 35 former Mervyn's locations in Utah, California, Texas and California will create a total of 5,200 jobs, the company said.

Kohl's, based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., will operate 1,059 stores in 49 states by the end of September.

Now if they could just get the old Mervyn's at Newgate Mall and Layton Hills Mall up here re-leased to someone. Not that I ever shop at either of those malls anyways, but that's irrelevant I suppose. Other people do.

In other news, I sure hope to hell that Salt Lake releases the $33 million in bond funding to the Hogle Zoo in addition to the $11 million they have already raised privately. The capital improvement would really bring this Utah treasure up to snuff, in my opinion.

I'm with you on the Hogle Zoo issue. I went there twice this summer. It's a great place, but there's much that can be improved. I'd love to see that happen.

I think the best place for TRAX to go is up 600 West.

600 West is the best option, it makes Central Station just that "CENTRAL" to all transit traffic in the city and Wasatch Front.

Someone remind me the arguments against 600 West. I know we've discussed it here (or in the transit thread), but I'm too lazy to go find it.

There are a few run down old houses on the east side of 600 West near North Temple... In order to have TRAX work on 600 West, they have to build a small viaduct over Frontrunner tracks for TRAX.

The viaduct would result in a wall in front of those 4 or 5 houses. So, the best option for all of SLC / Airport mass transit is being held hostage by a handful of houses that don't want this viaduct in front of them... Houses that in all likelihood will not end up being there in 5-10 years when that area is redeveloped.

If you ever want to feel good about the city you live in, just check out these photos of Detroit. It's like a nightmare. A lot of big old abandoned buildings.

I only see one abandoned bldg, the old train station. The rest of the bldgs don't look too bad... the city is a bit gritty, but I kind of like the urban grittiness.

Many of the buildings just look so rundown, and lots of them are just filthy. It kind of looks like what a city would look like if nothing were ever torn down, replaced, or restored. Something like the O.C. Tanner building would stick out like a sore thumb.

I liked those photos of downtown Detroit- lots of stylish old buildings. I'm more prone to call it "potential" than a "nightmare".

I LOVE art deco. Detroit seems to have a healthy stock of art deco buildings. Salt Lake struggled through the Great Depression development wise, hence the lack within.

Wow, those buildings are very old. Made me think that is what NYC would kinf of look like if it did not have so many modern buildings in Manhatten.

I love art deco too Wasatch, and was just amazed at that High School in Ogden. That's one style of architecture that I would like to see a tasteful, quality revival of in the CBD of Salt Lake, Ogden and Provo. To me Deco can be both modern, classic and just plain timeless. It's style fascinates me. I find myself able to stare at certain Art Deco structures for hours.
