Sarah McLachlan composes Vancouver 2010 "One Dream" theme song

Thanks to nova9 for posting this in the other topic, i thought it deserves its own thread.

Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan has released the Vancouver 2010 Olympic theme song, called "One Dream", and this will be used in all the promos for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games on NBC and Canadian stations.

Sarah McLachlan is a Canadian singer / songwriter and is best known for her emotional ballads. She has sold over 40 million records worldwide and founded the famous Lilith Fair tour.

Is this really the "official" theme song though? It doesn't sound "active" enough for a theme song, I would imagine this isn't it but perhaps there might be multiple theme songs like what Beijing had leading up to their Games.

I think Nelly Furtado would be perfect.

beautiful lyrics...

some people will compare this event and the city with Beijing and 08, especially those with backgrounds in both culture. That is why the theme song gota be good, everyone knows bc place and the bird's nest r not an fair match...

Not bad. But I think the song can include a bit more "energy", not trying to make listeners too relax and fall asleep.

Personally I think Celine Dion's song 'Power of the Dream' at 1996 Atlanta Olympics Opening Ceremonies had a lot more energy and looked good on TV.

A different rendition of the same song sang at the Closing Ceremonies by the "Children of Atlanta" was even better.

we can open up the roof, and have a shot from above, with burrad visible or half lighted, it'd be catchy enough...dont even need a song

vancouver's advantage is clearly the outdoors, what can u do with a decade old stadium alone

I'm partial to John Williams' Olympic themes
Everytime I hear The one he wrote for Salt Lake 2002, Call of the Champions, I think of the gold Medal hockey game, and the nation-wide celebrations on television after.
CBC ran various images from across the country to that piece.

But still, this is a very nice song too!

I did hear rumour about doing exactly that(open a hole) to the roof so the Olympic flame can get above it and be seen by people outside the venue.

Great song. It really fires up one's Olympic spirit. Let's hope the same happens to Vancouver 2010.

As it's a air-supported roof, I'm pretty sure that's not possible...at all.

How to light up the Olympic flame in a closed environment and maintain the flame for a few weeks is a technical challenge. I am sure some smart minds from Vanoc has found a solution. It is one of the surprise element for the Opening Ceremony. Another 141 days and we will find out.

Back to the theme song, I assume Sarah McLachlan will sing the theme song in the Opening Ceremony? Too bad I couldn't get a ticket.

^ well i have no doubt that they will be able to light the cauldron inside, it's just that your idea of them opening a hole in the roof - that's not possible at all.

A year or two ago, VANOC had an RFP for some sort of barge in False Creek for possibly using it as an outdoor cauldron.

You could always just make a core that leads out and fill the surrounding edges with helium. Either that or get a new transparent teflon roof.

It is a much more low key ballad. But you know what, it might work WITH the right visuals. The lyrics are very evocative.

And well, I would kinda take Sarah McLachlan over Celine Dion anyday. And it's a plus that this is her hometown.
Lyrics I can make out:

We can feel a change is coming,
like a kiss upon the tide,
breathing life into every heart.
A hope for (?)

We will walk this road together,
though at times we felt alone.
In the struggle to lift us up,
we find the strength from yet defined.

You carry courage,
carry the history,
of those gone before you.
Wherever you come from,
you're born out of one dream.
It finds you standing you here.

And you know that you can
You got the whole world in your hand.....

I actually have some doubts that this is the official theme...for one thing, the source. And considering that this is part of the opening ceremony, it should be an airtight secret.

It's possible that this is one of the sub-official theme songs for 2010....and hopefully it is. The lyrics are great, but it's just way, way too slow for the Olympics. Considering this would be performed at the opening ceremony, David Atkins would have a lot of say in the song and I'm quite sure he wouldn't bring us towards this direction.

You know, for Beijing's theme, they had this massive competition to find two "regular" people to sing it at the opening ceremony and to record it for distribution. But about two weeks before the ceremony, they changed their mind and ditched the plans and got Brightman and that Chinese guy to sing it.

Found it on YouTube:

We can feel a change is coming
Like a kiss upon a tide
breathing life into every heart
the hopeful kind of times
we'll walk this road together
though at times we felt alone
in the struggle to leave dissent
we find the strength one yet to find

You carry the courage, carry the history
but all are gone before you
wherever you come from
born of one dream finds you, standing here

And you know that you can make it
you've got the whole world in your hands
and you spend a lifetime working for this moment
and you are shining
you're all that you wanted to be

When you're airborne and free
at peace with gravity
high above everyone can see
the spirit of human ecology
how your flame keeps burning
when you leave all doubt behind
it's a giant leap for mankind
at peace we all shine

You carry the courage, carry the history
but all are gone before you
wherever you come from
born of one dream finds you, standing here

And you know that you can make it
you've got the whole world in your hands
cause you spend your lifetime working for this moment
(you are shining)
and you are shining
(you are shining)
you are all that you wanted to be
(you are shining)
and you are shining
you're all that you wanted to be

I actually think the song has lots of potential to be sung with more "gusto" and strength. It's got the right rhythms and build-ups.

Sarah McLachlan - like most singers - has a definable, trademark sound. So when she sings it, yes, it's sounds rather ethereal and a little softer.

But put a chorus behind the basic track or have a performer with a more forceful delivery, and this can work. You can certainly have this version as well, which is nice. I'm not saying that; it is her song. I'm just saying this could be sung with a lot of power in a stadium and work as a more powerful theme as well. I just wouldn't judge it based on her voice and delivery alone. They may have bolder plans for it as well, and it seems to have the elements that could work for a bigger sound version.

OK sarah is pretty cool but this song is not uplifting or inspiring at all. the song puts me asleep. Something a little more upbeat is needed for a sporting event. Furtado's "Forca" for the Euro Cup is an example.

sorry sarah.

This song certainly got potential to be a good theme song for Olympic.
I think the current version use piano and drum. The music is very soft and Sarah sang it quite softly.
I found it a good bed time music to listen.
By using different music instruments or create a symphony instrumental version and sing it in a more forceful and upbeat manner, the song can delivery a very different emotion and effect.
