Manhattan 2050

How will Manhattan have changed in 40 years?

How many more people will the island have? Skyscrapers linking downtown and midtown, with Trump SoHo a precursor of things to come? Finally buildings over 2,000'?

I love hearing peoples' perspectives on the future of the island, so share your own!

I think the entire island will be turned into a prison, run by the criminals. Then at some point the president will be taken hostage and the cops and some good guy prisoners will go in there and get 'em.

Sounds good. Could something similar also happen in LA?

If that is the case than I predict the cars will look like this.

5000 footers will be added to the skyline, when aircraft can take off and descend vertically.

I hope the Jets have explored a return to Manhattan once more and this time they are successful. I see a need to create more land through dig-outs due to the fact that land without a skyscraper has run out and it's too expensive to tear them down.

well if we go off of what Futurama predicts, we should have an alien invasion by then that has leveled the entire city and we have to rebuild.

The Manhattan Airport should be fully functional by then.

What a dumb idea. Is this some kind of joke? I like how they plan to eliminate all of Central Park and they've got the environmentalists rallying for it? Surreee... And why build an airport for high emission airplanes that will cost more to build than HSR? Doesn't make sense all around.

Well I am convinced. Join me and sign the petition.

http://manhattanairport.org/?page_id=926

Join millions of supporters as we reach out across the Hudson and around the world. As we rescue a relic from our great-grandparents generation, invigorate and revitalize it in our generation, and hand it down as a gift to our children and grandchildren. By signing this petition you demonstrate your commitment to the quest to enrich and complete what is surely one of the world’s great cities.

Even the Manhattanites must relish this grand plan. This should be wrapped up in a couple of years once Obama fast-tracks it. It would stimulate the economy too. Think of all of the earthmovers and bulldozers it would take to take the park apart and rebuild it in the image of our generation.

Emphatic “Yes” Vote As Influx Of Visitors Crashes Website

23 July 2009

(New York, NY) - New Yorkers issued another resounding referendum in favor of Manhattan International Airport as a storm of media attention drove just over 147,000 visitors to the Foundation website in the past week. Meanwhile at their Tribeca headquarters Foundation publicists scrambled to accommodate the requests from national and international news organizations and a small IT crew worked overnight to make sure the massive surge of supporters were able to get the information they needed. “Things have been busy around here but we’re keeping our eyes on the prize,” said Press Secretary Audrey Cortlandt. “We certainly welcome all the positive media attention, it’s an excellent barometer of public opinion. New Yorkers are beginning to get behind Manhattan Airport in a big way.”

That would be the most HORRIBLE idea ever.

That website has to be fake.

Edit: Actually it is a hoax.

Here is an interesting proposal for adding a sort of wetlands region to New York after the big hurricane likely hits. It would all make up one massive green area that both absorbs the waves from hurricanes and offers new park space.

Punk rockers in leather will battle mutants and other sexy Alphabet City deviants in the perennially-darkened and damp streets. Striking poses and nose-piercings will reign supreme.

I think the space between the new WTC and the Empire state building will be non-stop skyscrapers. Central park will also get a lot of shade from the residential towers that will likely surround it.

Hopefully a high speed rail system will feed into New York.

about as much as manhattan changed in the last 40 years imo, you will see alot more 600-800ft towers built over the next 40 years, with an odd tower 1000ft or over, thats the way manhattan has gone since the 30s

Geology and the fact that Lower Manhattan is a well-heeled nabe will put the kabosh on any of these "Skyscrapers in the Village" pipe dreams. The West side between ~50st to 28st will be the next big office district, along with the garment district and the far east side in Midtown. Harlem around Coulmbia becomes a total extention of the Upper west side, along with Central Harlem below 125st and East Harlem below 110st becoming gentrified. The rest of Harlem keeps being somewhat crime ridden. Washington Heights and Inwood are totally gentrifed as well.

That Manhattan Airport site is interesting...

Quote:
"Public dollars helped create Central Park in the 1850s. And public responsibility dictates that we transform this underutilized asset into something we so desperately need today. Manhattan Airport will prove New York City no longer allows it’s vestigial prewar cityscape to languish in irrelevance but instead reinvents these spaces with a daring and inspired bravado truly befitting one of the world’s great cities."
I didn't get much time to dig around the site, but maybe it's a clever spoof to make people think about their surroundings and how wonderful Central Park is? Or maybe not. Either way, I was thinking of marketing ideas for a local park in my city and thought it would neat to put up a site and take out ads calling the city to replace the entire park, the city's largest, with car parking. I imagined that it would bring people to get more involved in the upkeep of the park and recognize it for the gem that it is.
