VANOC unveils torch relay community mini-cauldrons

This will be the mini-cauldron lit at the 200 communities the torch relay will go through:

It’s hot news: VANOC unveils 2010 cauldron
VANOC’s community cauldron will be lit in 200 celebrations across the country.

JEFF HODSON
METRO VANCOUVER
September 17, 2009 5:21 a.m.

Organizers of the 2010 Vancouver Games yesterday unveiled a portable stage and a cauldron that will be lit in community celebrations in cities and towns during the Olympic torch relay.

Beginning in Victoria on Oct. 30, the torch will visit 1,030 communities during its 106-day journey.

There will be 200 “community celebrations” that will include drummers and acrobats, musicians, artists, and entertainers.

A torchbearer, chosen from each community, will light the community cauldron — a white, curved cauldron about 1.3-metres tall designed to complement the Olympic torch. The relay actually begins Oct. 22, when the Olympic Flame will be lit by the sun’s rays in Olympia, Greece. It will be paraded through Greece and will be flown to Canada on a Canadian Forces aircraft.

From this picture, I'm dissapointed...though to give a more valid opinion, i think we need to see the bottom of it as well and from various other angles.

Hopefully this doesn't reflect on the design of the actual cauldron at BC Place.

I think it's innovative if a little stale (no, they're not contradictions...not quite).

I prefer it above Salt Lake's and Sydney's though. I put it as bland as the Athens one but not as nice as the Beijing one.

If it's only 1.3 metres tall, how do they keep people safe from the flames?

How many mini-cauldrons will there be? Are they permanent?

I've been told that it's akin to the Turning Torso or even our Ritz Carlton.

So far I like the looks of it more than the other ones posted, perhaps aside from Beijing's. I think one reason Beijing's succeeds is because it is modeled on a more traditional design whereas the others tried to be ultra-modern/avant-garde and ultimately failed. I like ours because, though entirely modern, it has a sleek, clean design that is simple but all the more attractive because of it (unlike the other modern ones which look like they're trying too hard).

Yeah, seriously. We're talking about Vancouverites here. Not the smartest bunch of people. They better but it on another pedestal so the flame is out of reach....unless it's meant only for olympic events where there will be a lot of personel guarding.

I can see these being a target for our crazy granola warriors that are anti-olympics.

I'm dissapointed, but with the whole view it does look quite a bit better than the first picture i posted in the first post.

It looks like a really fancy garbage bin, i think it would have looked nicer if they had used metal grey for every other side instead of all white.

I hope it doesn't say too much about the cauldron design at BC Place. Creativity and size is quite limited considering we've got the air-supported roof.

I think these mini-cauldrons are only for ceremonial purposes, so activists shouldn't be that much of a problem. They will have back-up flames in like 6 lanterns in the caravan just in case something does happen....and during the torch relay, if the activist crowds get a bit too rowdy the security guards might even put out the flame and skip that portion of the relay - like what happened in Beijing.

Expect a lot of crazy, the first day at Victoria should be quite something.

I do have to say Mr X nailed it. My very first thought was it looks like one of those cool stainless steel "simple human" or "oxo" brand garbage bins.

It really is almost funny.

I'm sure it will be fine, and it's not offensive. I never even knew there was such a thing until these posts so I'm sure it's just fine.

But it is funny. I'll grin every time I see a photo of one.

Ya that last picture settles it, garbage can pure and simple. I wouldn't mind if they used that design for garbage cans in the downtown area.
