not visible in these pics...but they all have vinyl siding down the sides of them.....with stone on the front.....in person the stone doesn't have a very high quality look to it....it F*cking pisses me off that these pieces of S*it are the best they could build on nova scotia's most prestigious street...WTF!!!!

Where is this Harbourview development and its $700K McMansions?

I think they look kinda tacky in that location. They'd look great in the suburbs... and they look great in those pictures... but they don't fit in on Young Ave. And I'm not a Young Ave resident... I live in the North End.

Those three Harbourview Homes (which fit in much better) are... if I'm not mistaken... perched on the very edge of the railway cut just after you cross the Tower Rd. bridge. It used to be a small wooded area. I presume someone bought the land from CN?

I don't know who they bought the land from but for awhile I remember there was a sign up in the location for a school of some sorts.

Just a theory but the land might of been municipally owned since the waste water pipe crosses the rail-cut right behind one of the houses.

I agree, it is an outrage that the owners have such little respect for the streetscape, design, and quality. The windows are cheap garbage too.

Vinyl on Young? Whats next? Shopping Carts with bottle bags parked next to the street poles? No disrespect to the Cart people though! The guy that was at Petro Canada on Quinpool last week had his shinning like a star after he washed the entire cart with the window wipers at the pumps.
Personally I like the design of the buildings but they should have been stone the entire way around. Stone appears as many shades of gray and even some with some hints of light brown. With the vinyl being completely one color it just looks off to me. The window surroundings repainted a tan or brown would bring out the windows and match the stone as well. Thats how I would do it, might look butt ugly in real life who knows?

My hope is that all new construction with vinyl siding will someday be replaced with real shingles... it would certainly improve the look of these McMansions for 10-15 years in the future.

Although I'm all for quality materials... I think the stone was a bad choice in this case. It has a Disney quality to me. It reminds me of that little street shopping area in Dartmouth Crossing. But the design is the bigger problem. Here is a prime example of quality materials not making up for lackluster design. Young Ave and the South End in general is almost all historic Victorian style. To put these suburban cookie-cutter homes in that area... they just stick out like a sore thumb. But the design is the real problem. Out of proportion. Skinny lots. Too tall. No details. Boring. Big garages in front. Not at all modern or alternately... Victorian. 100% suburban style. Bottom line? These homes could be any home in Cole Harbour or Spryfield or whereever... but for the stone facade. Taking a cookie cutter suburban design and slapping stone on the front of it does not make it "high end" in my books.

couldn't have said it better myself....the vinyl siding is merely the icing on the cake....they have essentially butchered an historic street scape....modern would look fine...as it does farther down Young, with a Brown L shaped contemporary house built in 05..... as it blends in with the street nicley....the house is past the bridge, and the proportion is ideal...it's about 2-3 lots from the park.....and the real kick to the head, is this is probably the type of development those lunatics in the HT applaud.....(i speculate)

A while ago there was a feature in the Herald about plans to revitalize Main Street in Dartmouth. Does anyone know where that idea went?

I noticed the old brick building on the corner of Almon and Windsor, former home to a bike shop, antiques shop and clothing store is up for a refresh. All the tennants are out of the building and they are now accepting lease aplications. According to the drawing they will fix up the brick work with light brick trim and put in new windows. It's one of those buildings that's easy to not pay any attention to, but the proposed work will make it more noticable.

The south side of Gerard Hall is done, the final finish is a light tan color, similar in colour to the trim on the east and west face.
