That's a good question. I was a bit uneasy about the south crane's jump into the steel cage, such a thin structure meant to hold up the world's most safest tower.
It doesn't look like they're wasting any time with the steel cage over the north core. I see the steel they delivered being put together right now.
It only looks thin and once it's encased in concrete it well bear little or no weight.
One of the tower cranes fully loaded (load + crane + tower) is less than 150 tons. The core steel is designed to support several thousand tons before the cement of the core encases it.

Does this mean that they are going to extend the steel cage further above the concrete, or that it will keep pace as the concrete is poured?

There is a limit as to how high the erecting steel can go before being encased. I'm pritty sure the south core steel has not gone higher due in part to being at that limit.
In the rendering of the lobby with the huge blast wall, there are sharp rectanglular stripes of white light along the upper half of the blast wall. Where is this light coming from? The wall is solid, right?
I think the concept of the Freedom Tower lobby is very similar to that of 7 WTC...

After the North Core jump they are putting the beams really fast. And on this picture we can also see the final four east-west connectors in the green circle.
Wow, I never expected them to put up the steel cage this fast. We could see another north crane jump by the end of september or later, depending on the weather, columns going in at around the same time, and another jump by october. By this rate, we could be seeing the floor-a-week schedule into effect by this year!
How tall are each of the perimeter columns? I'm going to guess that another level of the perimeter needs to go up before the base is considered complete, that it has reached its 200 ft height. Then the transistion to the floor a week mode can go into effect.

How tall are each of the perimeter columns? I'm going to guess that another level of the perimeter needs to go up before the base is considered complete, that it has reached its 200 ft height. Then the transistion to the floor a week mode can go into effect.
