My personal favorite pet peeves.

Watermarks

Unless you’re sneaking behind Apple’s closed doors to photograph their next supersecret prototype and you’re desperate for the credit, watermarks are just tacky. If you’re concerned about people stealing your photos, don’t post them on the internet.

The photography game today rewards openness and exposure. The watermark is either the sign of a newbie who doesn’t know any better or insecure photographers who simultaneously thinks their photos are better than they are and that everyone is out to steal them.

Yes, it sucks when someone steals your photo when they should have paid you for it. Send them an invoice. Don’t ruin your photos for everyone else who wants to enjoy them.

For photo editors looking for potential photographers, the watermark is usually just a sign of someone who will be difficult to work with. Either because they’ve been burned in the past and they’re paranoid, or they just have an inflated idea of the market value of their work.

I don't mind watermarks as much as I hate timestamps on photos.

I liked some of the comments on that page. My favourite being this one:

"Does this have anything to do with photos? No. Mea Cupla. But the "10 Things..." articles are getting so old. It is the journalistic equivalent of an arms length HDR photo that's out of focus due to shutter lag and sporting an obnoxious watermark using the Comic Sans font."

Well, I thought I'd posted my Mayland building tour, but it musta gotten munched somehow. Anyways, here's a couple of buildings you don't see too often, and a view of downtown from Mayland Industrial:

Golder's new Building, with old Firestone tower beside for contrast

Stantec Building. I talked to a guy who worked in the Stantec building while they were adding extra storie(s?) to it - he was right below the construction and it was a noisy place to work, and dirty at times too. The building in the foreground is the remnant of the the old Firestone plant - renovated for warehousing in the back for Canpar, and warehouse retail in the front facing Barlow trail.

A hazy view of downtown, thanks to the wind that was blowing dust and COLD air into me on what should have been a nice August afternoon. 19th Street is in the forground, with the rails being the access to Meridian industrial on the east side of Barlow.

Cool perspective. I like how what we can't really see of the BoM building is reflected in Centrium Place. I'm looking forward to the exact same shot but at night.

Regulator I took a shot of Centrium and FCC also. Great minds think alike! You captured a great angle for the two buildings!

If only all buildings had this nice an interface with the street. Fortunately the City has finally gotten serious about urban design and ensuring active frontages at grade. So many of the 70s and 80s towers have such blank, inactive facades. Pretty much all the new towers have nice active at grade frontages on key streets.

^further evidence of this can be seen in Centennial's street frontage. Far friendlier than those of buildings like Fifth ave Place or BP Tower, etc.. Those boutique buildings have all been great for street frontage (Opus 8, Pennwest I, and Centrium)
