Flagpoles are up - inside the "planters" - were they located there before?
Could the "planters" be water features?
There's also a glass railing/fence on the far side of each "planter".
So it looks like visibility will be retained through and over the new canopies.

I walked by the square this past weekend, the new glass domes look fabulous!

Any idea when the pagodas are to be removed?

They do indeed. All in all, especially when compared to many if not most mid-sized North American cities, Robson Square is still pretty darn good.

Except for those rusted out, ill-fitting pagodas . . . has anyone got an air-sickness bag? . . . I think I'm going to heave . . .

If the cost of removing the pagodas is the hold up, I'll bet they could enlist volunteers. I'd be glad to pick up a sledge hammer en route

You can see on the pic you took today on the north dome, slight discolourations on the inner cement ring of where the flag poles were bolted before.
With glass fences now at least we know they want to keep a view through, so a water feature in the planters would be cool but perhaps they'll just put in low flowers/plant bed. Could you notice if the glass fence goes right down to the bottom of the planter?

Yeah, it seems to - which suggests water rather than a planter.
There are a couple of posts in the trough that could be drains/water supply. They're located near each end of the trough (the one on the right is a bit clearer than the one on the left)

I'm wondering now if they'll put anything in there. The bolts holding in the flag poles and even the glass would be under a bit of water or soil if they used plants. Plus freezing in winter so they would have to drain it. I'm stumped.

Like I said a while back, their demolition is not included in this current contract, but that does not preclude them from being removed in a subsequent contract or by city staff directly...

or by some overzealous forum members armed with a hacksaw

If you had seen the moonscape of parking lots, billboards, and crummy, low rise commercial buildings that occupied that three-block long long space before Robson Square was ever built, you'd turn white.

Construction fencing is down at Robson Square and the sub-street level is accessible. Looking lively...

Looking good. I think they should add more lighting just because it still looks a little dark, perhaps "sconces" from the columns shining up onto the ceiling.

I'm impressed with the design of the domes, however the overall function of the square is illusive.

Robson Square fails on the level of being an effective seasonal ice skating venue as it is far too small, meeting neither NHL, nor International hockey size requirements.

It also fails as a functioning public gathering space due to its sub surface location. The most successful squares are ones which feature art displays, public performances, vendors, fountains, etc. Due to the design of the square, it features none of these attractions.
