Lol, agreed. Anyone who does not like it, should not live in a growing metropolis of 2.3 million people.

People that are against the Gateway project need to open their eyes and their minds. The reason this project has been approved so fast is because its basly needed, not just for us, but for the rest of the country. This project is bigger than Vancouver. Its about opening up the Pacific Gateway to the rest of Canada. So stop complaining, or get paved over.
Hmm... if you want to open up the Pacific Gateway... would it make more sense to improve airports, railway lines, and ports? An extra lane within this region doesn't simply open up traffic for the rest of Canada.

They are improving airports, railways, and ports... or at least there are plans for improving all that.

No, but having a 10 lane bridge with proper interchanges on each end and future rail capability on a second lower deck in place the current 5 lane bridge (odd lane bridges = disaster) that is complete choke point on our main route connecting Vancouver to the rest of Canada does help.

I don't see anywhere in the Port Mann design mentioning a second future deck, only rapid transit capability on the main deck. I actually think it's an unproven idea (at present) to have a second deck on a cable-stayed bridge, unless there's one out there that just escaped my mind for a moment. =O

Every mention of the rail line on it mentions is on a second deck below the main deck.

While not cable stayed, the W. span of the SF Bay bridge has 2 decks which is a suspension bridge. I don't see any reason why a similar idea couldn't be put on a cable stay. Heck, the extradosed bridges which are popping up all over the place around here are most of the way there.

Yeah, but it's a little more complex than that. Eight lanes east of the PMB through to 216 th St. Also upgrading outdated/unsafe interchanges along that stretch.

And the express/collector system through Burnaby with a 14-lane cross-section under the new Gilmore crossing. It also appears that the express/collector set-up will eventually extend eastward to the reconstructed Gaglardi Interchange based upon the new lengthier overpass bridge pier abutments.

The PMB HOV lanes cannot accomodate a future rapid transit system alongside a freeway lane. That's certainly not plausible.

As for second decks on cable-stayed crossings, the 19 km long Fehmarn Belt Bridge between Germany and Denmark will have two levels.

I know the extent of the whole project, trust me, i have studied it in depth. I was just trying to point out to A.K. that it is much more than adding 1 lane each direction, and i simply listed the most important part.

also the possible rail on a second deck would not be for a line that runs along the freeway, but simply a possible line that would use that bridge to cross, but would have alternate alignments on both sides of the bridge.

I know! You were the first one to spot the new Tilbury Interchange on the SFPR!

hehe, i just want them to post the new alignments of highway 1 on the web page! Honestly, there is an insane amount of work going along the entire stretch (the first temporary detour off ramp - the first east bound off ramp after the Port Mann that goes to highway 7 - is already paved!) How hard is it for them to post the new designs! I want to now how many alterations have been made.

Well I'm a long time lurker of this forum and thought I'd give my two cents. Or maybe its 2 dollars now with inflation

The biggest improvement for me on the Hwy 1 project. Is not the addition of the extra lane. But the express collector lanes for grandview and willingdon. Finally all three lanes on grandview will go onto the freeway. That little side street from boundary to the freeway entrance will be blocked off. There blocking of the way towards still creek. That is something I think they should of done years ago. I just hope they somehow stop, possibly with and island, those idiots who come down boundary northbound in the curb lane and instead of turning right onto the freeway entrance they drive straight though

Also redoing the whole cape horn interchange and installing express collector lanes there as well.

I wished they would have the new alignment pdf files up for the single bridge.

Yes, it would be great to see the updated alignment files. I am also eagerly awaiting some artists renderings of some of the components, especially the cape horn area.

I have been following, and studying this project since I first saw the Gateway Program Definition report, and I have to firmly re-state my agreement that this is LONG overdue. The safety improvements, and improvements to merging areas alone will make a difference. One of the biggest factors I see slowing the flow down is insufficient merge-space for big trucks. Brunette avenue merging onto the freeway eastbound is a particularly bad spot for this. It surprises me a bit that they aren`t just connecting the United boulevard exit lane with the Brunette-Highway one merge lane... making an auxillary lane. I would imagine many trucks would want to travel from Brunette to the Mary Hill Bypass. Whatever... small battles.

Yeah, it would be nice to see the as-built plans.
I recall the newspapers saying that the plans were "simplified" by the P3 proponents (who are still building the project, but as a design-build rather than a design-build-finance-operate-maintain) - so I'm guessing that may mean that the Cape Horn interchange (where the plans currently on the website show Lougheed Hwy transitioning to the south side of the TCH) was significantly changed. Anyone have any insight?

Well considering how much land clearing they are doing along the south side of the #1 before the highway 7 eastbound off ramp it would make sense that the lougheed is still transitional to the south side.

I really hope they have not simplified the proposed design (honestly if they have, fuck P3s forever). The current cape horn is the worst designed interchange ever, the proposal on line is fantastic! If they simplify it then I am worried all we will be getting is a polished turd not worth the 4 year construction trouble.

Honestly, i thought we were finally getting something done right.

Yeah, they are clearing a lot of land for the interchange and are putting up a lot of pilings all over the place and even cutting back the hill to the North of Lougheed. I think this interchange is a key component to the bridge, and future NFPR, so it probably won't be dumbed down.

If it is being simplified its because it is being built for a single bridge, no more need to worry about the current bridge and it's approach having to integrate into the final plan. You just build around the current road and tear it up when you are done. I bet that is actually saving a lot of time and money. The single mega bridge is more expensive, but the interchange is cheaper to build now and will interfere less with traffic during construction.

You could argue that the Anthony Henday/Hwy 2 interchange is simplified, there is only one Level 3 flyover as a result. As long as they maintain minimum 90km/h speed limits on throughfares and 70km/h on ramps and the capacity is there and all the connections are maintained and a few new important ones added then I couldn't care less if they simplify it as long as it works and still looks good.

I also hope that the "simplification" is just referring to the fact that they are buiding towards a single bridge now and not the twin structure.

I just hope "simplification" does not mean traffic lights or tight corners where you have to slow down to 30-50 km/h. If they put a traffic light up because of cost cutting measures. I think I'll personally go up to that light and blow it up.
