I was walking by The Westin Hotel yesterday and I noticed that they had part of the street blocked off.There was construction material within the blocked area. I think they may be getting started on replacing all the glass.

Are all those CDC buildings going for LEED certification? I would hope so, since its neighbor Emory has made such a huge commitment to going green.

Sorry, let me get my geography correct - the Mall of Georgia area is Buford, not Duluth. Although one could argue that once you get that far OTP, it's all the same...

I drive by Emory/CDC on a regular basis. Really, really nice.

I really hope that they can re-vamp the Clifton Road Corridor to make it more non-automobile oriented.

Emory is one of the only university's in the metro area that is not served by a limited-access highway.

The fight isn’t over yet. The Georgia Tech Foundation is appealing the denial of the demolition permit, and it has 30 days to appeal the city’s decision on granting Landmark status.

I don't see why Tech keeps banging their head against this wall. There are so many surface parking lots just waiting to be developed in this area.. Tech owns that lot across from the bookstore. That needs to be developed.

Pshh, I mean this from the DOT that doesn't think it should include rail in it's funding requests makes so much sense.

That could change, however. John Oxendine, who I presume will be our new governor shortly, has been talking about reviving the East Atlanta freeway project. That would be a boon not only to Emory, but also to people trying to pass through the city, and intowners trying to get to their jobs in the suburbs.

Building a highway through east Atlanta from Ga. 400 down to about I-675, parallel to the Downtown Connector.

John Oxendine, Georgia’s insurance commissioner and a candidate for governor, says the state should consider such a project again, a video pitch he made online on how he would address the state’s transportation issues.

With congestion choking our growth and northeast suburb residents forced to drive the Connector to traverse Atlanta, “vision” is called for, he said.

I hope you're not suggesting that building a new interstate right through Little 5 Points, Edgewood, Candler Park, Inman Park, Reynoldstown, etc, is a great idea...

In his video, he seems to have forgotten that other modes of transportation exist (like rail), and forgets that there is a MARTA line taking you all the way from Ga400 to the airport. Seriously, this idea makes me sick

When talking about the Northern Arc, Oxendine defends his idea to put it North of Lake Lanier because the South is "developed." However, when he is talking about the East Atlanta Highway, he just says "it would go through this area," not taking into account that "this area" contains some of Atlanta's most beautiful historic neighborhoods. Has he even been to Atlanta before?

I'm tired of uncreative fools like Oxendine. The age of building highways, building sprawl, and building more highways is over. A leader in this state needs to start thinking progressively now, or Georgia will forever will be left in the dust.

and i cant help but think of the differences between atlanta and older cities skylines. new york, philadelphia, chicago, etc. all have "gray" skylines, while you could consider atlantas "blue". i just find that to be so interesting. all the latest shots of buckhead are so intriguing. ah, i just cant get my head around it.

The Ox is no dummy. He's been around politics a long, long time and he knows what works and what doesn't. As I understand his plan, he's basically focusing on creating more ways to let people bypass the city of Atlanta, or to at least allow them to freely pass through it if they need to get to places like the airport. That should help decrease traffic within the city itself.

Let people bypass Atlanta, don't send them right through the centre of the city.

The Ox is looking at the bigger picture. As he says, you've got to take the long range view. 90% of the people in Atlanta live outside the city limits and probably 98% of them live outside the neighborhoods that would be affected. When you take the rest of Georgia into account the figure is probably over 99%. Sometimes you have to consider the good of the many.
