Kinda blows that argument that LRT is cheap.

LRT can be cheap if it is designed to minimize costs (e.g. fewer tunnels and bridges and more at-grade running) but that would make the service slower and less enticing.

As for 1.9 billion $ for Link extension, remember they're boring most of their way though I think. In some other places it may be cheaper due to the geography / geology.

OT, but when is Seattle going to building their Uni extension? And would their boring machines be suitable for us to buy/rent for our UBC extension?

They came pretty close to stealing Translink's "T" brand for transit!

You snooze, you lose.

Not to mention that the "ORCA" smart card name was also Translink's, but then they took it.

Hopefully, Translink does have plans to start installing the "T" brand soon....I would imagine they might install it on Commercial-Broadway over the next few weeks/month/next year? Afterall, it's already getting the new branding signage. Our "T" looks WAY better btw.

While their LRT line does seem to be overbuilt, you gotta give them credit for having foresight....something that Translink lacks.

lol, looking at the renderings I just realized that the ground level glass street entrance for university station is just about the same length as an elevated station on No.3 Road:

And to put that in perspective:

That station is incredibly airy! The platform's ceiling must be at least 8-storeys high.

It reminds me of the stations for the Copenhagen Metro, quite similar:

I think you are pushing it on that comment, because measuring the diagram there that would put their platform lengths between 220 and 240 meters.

^ i measured 120-metres.

Nevertheless, it's a really impressive station. UBC deserves the same, and an underground station too.

Well if you measure the diagram the ground level glass street entrance for university station is 3.5 cm (on my screen), while the platform is 22 cm(on my screen).

22 divided by 3.5 = 6.3 times larger, that would make their platforms 252 meters!

In fact looking at the diagram C-line stations are probably longer than the above grade glass entrance for university station (the one on top).

^ lol, regardless i'd prefer the C-Line system any day....but i'm just rather impressed by the architecture (and foresight) that Seattle has.

hehe, I just have to point out exaggerations when I see them. Call me the journalism police!

While Seattle has shown foresight in station size, they have shown a complete lack of foresight in the technology they have chosen and in the inconsistencies in grade separation.

Nice looking stations on the Seattle line - but thew University is really deep underground. I prefer closer to the surface like Canada Line, easier and faster to get to the trains.

What I find amazing is what we spent and our ridership compared to Seattle. US$2.1 billion (CDN$2.3 billion) and on opening day, 12,000 passengers per day. Canada Line, $2.1 billion and on opening day 85,000 people riding the line. Both figures are before bus integration with the lines.

Most Vancouver bus routes carry more than the Seattle LRT line. Still, I hope it is successful and the extensions will make a big difference.

I estimate the platforms at about 80-90 metres, using the height of the figures as a rough guess of 2 metres.

I think you missed the first part of the conversation, haha. Mr. X said that the ground level glass street entrance for university station looks to be the same length of our c-line stations. Look and read closer, you will get it (also go back a few posts).

I was just pointing out his extreme exaggeration in comparing the 2 system's station lengths.

Yea, the vast cavern-like station is quite pretty but not the most ideal for commuters.

I absolutely adore Broadway Station....it's airy-ness, and how it's so close to the street.

Ridership for our line is no doubt impressive, and it isn't letting up. The magic 100,000 figure (and perhaps some more) will be reached in the very near future.

Broadway station is nice, and it will feel even better when it is extended to the full 50m. I rode the line again yesterday for fun and i love the open feel of the C-line cars inside, along with the great station announcements.

I also really like City Center station, also because it connects our two main underground malls together (along with Granville Station E/M line) and actually gives Vancouver a mini-underground feeling.

Having a subway does make the city feel that much larger now (not to mention our metro network now has a new dimension, north/south).

While these are pretty overdue I don't think anyone has posted photos of the lineup for Waterfront Station on opening day from this perspective.

Ehh, I'll probably get tarred and feathered for saying this, but I was thinking the train announcements should have been bilingual (even if just for the Olympics English-French). Even better would be Chinese! Haha HK Metro!

All that aside, I do like the announcements... that voice is kinda sexy. I could go for listening to her say the same thing again in French.

French here would be beyond pointless on our metro, Chinese (mandarin or cantonese?) would make sense, but then we would have to integrate it into the rest of the system to make everything compatible and there are a world of debates waiting right there.

I say it's a can of worms we stay away from for now.

Again, French in the Vancouver area comes second after English......Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, etc...

After we have all those languages are in the announcement, we include French (and not Quebec French, France French).
