SLC puts building permit process online

Don't want to haul that pile of paperwork to City Hall for a building permit? Hop over to your computer instead.
Salt Lake City has launched a new submission, review and tracking program that enables developers, architects, contractors and residents to submit paper-free plans to city offices.
By starting ProjectDox, the city will spare 512,000 pounds of paper, prevent 2,300 pounds of hydrocarbons, and save customers from driving 360,000 miles, according to estimates from the software company.
"Paper-based plan submission and review is a resource-intensive process that has basically been done the same way for over a century," said city building services director Orion Goff.
Mayor Ralph Becker says the upgrade will be an "incredible tool" for the development community and neighborhood groups. The software also integrates "seamlessly" with the new Web-based program used in the planning division, notes Ron Loback, president and CEO of Avolve Software.
"This technology is going to make a lot of our customers very happy," added Frank Gray, the city's director of community and economic development.

Yeah, I don't think they own the Luxor. One of the employees at Mountain Coin, which services slot machines and the like, told me that particular business (coin-op repair and sales) was the closest they would ever get to supporting gambling, as they strongly object to it on moral grounds.

How did you ever get the "color points" of designated areas? How could this knowledge be obtained so easily.

All you have to do is search the county assessor's website for whoever (or whatever) pays the property tax on a particular parcel. If it's a known Kingston Family holding company, then it's theirs. And you can determine what companies are Kingston companies by searching the state department of commerce website for the names of Kingston leaders and prominent family members as registered principals.

And to preempt anybody from getting pissy about this not being development related, consider that knowing how to navigate government websites for development-related items of interest, such as parcel owners, is a reasonably valid bit of information for this board in times of slow development.

I don't know if I want to bring this up again, but here is my idea for a convention center hotel. I think that the current Little America Hotel should turn the west side of the property into midrise office or residential, thus reducing the number of rooms it currently has (850). With the reduction in rooms, they could put more people into the Grand America if filled to capacity, which they do already, and thus increase their fill rate (I forgot the correct term for that).

The we should let Earl Holding build a convention center hotel close to the Salt Palace, or even on a corner of the roof. Hopefully something a little more modern.

Even if you love or hate Mr. Holding, you must agree that he would create a very nice hotel and he has the money to fund it.

Someone mentioned the Utah World Trade center over on the CCC thread. I have on opinion that with Gov. Hunstman becoming the President's liason to China, the notion of the UWT building inches a bit closer to reality. What I mean is, I still think Hunstman will be playing for Utah, as well as for the US, and could be pretty persuasive to Chinese companies. Or maybe I'm being wishful in my thinking. What do you guys think?

My neighbor in Sugar House, 2 houses to the east, is one of the Kingston wives. She apparently recently had a nervous breakdown and was taken back to the compound. The other day a whole parcel of wives were over cleaning out her house and packing up all of her belongings. They were all wearing tshirts and jeans, but a couple of them did have long braids down their backs.

I didn't manage to get a photo of any of them, but did take a photo of all their vans, etc. The 4 closest vehicles in this photo are all polygamist vehicles.

Yeah, all my Kingston neighbors (at all 3 houses) dress completely normally and have modern hairstyles. The teenagers have their own cars, with band stickers all over them, and the 5 mothers dress like any other stay at home mom. The patriarchs (there are 2 adult men out of the 3 homes, as the one guy has two houses of wives) do look a little dated, in dark "Wrangler" jeans and western cut shirts. There are a lot of 12-passenger vans and Suburbans around, though. A couple were probably on your street, Stenar.

At the hardware store, they certainly weren't wearing pastel colored FLDS dresses, but you could tell that something was up, especially from the dress and demeanor of the men.

I'm being serious. I've heard from city officials that the LDS church had intentions of eventually expanding the BYU Salt Lake Campus to that block.

The plans were to expand that block into a BYU Salt Lake Campus along with some student housing, but that may or may not happen. At earliest, from what my source tells me, 2012 is the first that anything will be done there. As I've indicated before, although I don't remember where, I bet the LDS church is waiting until CCC is completed and hopefully a rebound in the ecconomy.

They guy who would come round to mow the lawn of my polygamist neighbor, who I assumed was her husband, did look kinda old-fashioned. Thick unstylish glasses, usually wearing a white dress shirt and black slacks to mow the lawn, but they were sorta funky weird, old dress clothes that looked like he got them at the D.I. or had them since the '50s.

NGA to Hold its 2011 Meeting in Salt Lake City



SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The National Governors Association will hold its annual meeting in Utah in 2011.

It will be the fourth time the group has held its meeting in Salt Lake City. The previous meetings were in 1919, 1930 and 1947.

The annual meeting draws about 1,000 attendees each year and is one of the organization's two official business meetings each year.

Does Forbes do anything other than compile lists these days? It seems that they've ranked just about everything, and they seem to come up with their rankings out of the blue. They rarely make any sense.
