River Landing's west promenade opens to public
By David Hutton, TheStarPhoenix.com
August 21, 2009 4:02 PM

SASKATOON — The west riverbank promenade at River Landing, connecting the area under the Idylwyld Bridge to Victoria Park, was unveiled Friday amid forecasts the waterfront oasis will help bridge the city’s east-west divide.

Politicians from all three levels of government celebrated the opening by walking through a fake brick wall at the east end of the site.

“I still remember (U.S. President Ronald Reagan) in Berlin, looking at East and West Berlin, and saying (President Mikhail Gorbachev) tear down this wall,” said Mayor Don Atchison. “We want people to be united once again. . . In fact, here in Saskatoon we have people on east and west sides. . . . and what we have today is the joining together again of the downtown Saskatoon and Riversdale that we seemed to have lost for so many years.

“For people who have walked the trails and jogged the trails for so long, wondering when will this side be open again, well, today is the day.”

The $18-million promenade, which includes a pedestrian bridge and walkways, a boat dock, and river-viewing areas, was completed at more than $2-million over budget and one-year behind schedule because of weather and regulatory issues, Atchison said.

Despite recent cost increases, the entire River Landing project is expected to net a surplus of $2.4-million once land is sold in the area and funding from all levels of government is accounted for, Atchison said.

The promenade is a major component of the expected decade-long $52-million renaissance of the brownfield between the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge and Avenue C, dubbed River Landing Phase 2.

Forming the backdrop to the riverfront opening, the former A.L. Cole pumphouse was abuzz, as public tours were given showing concept drawings of the site.

There have been “five or six” interested restauranteurs who contacted the city about the pumphouse location, said Sandi Schultz, the city’s special projects manager. While a restaurant is the most logical choice, the eventual tenant will depend on what types of proposals come from the private sector when tenders go out, likely next summer, she said.

“We have the highest hopes that the pumphouse will be the focal point . . . of perhaps all of the riverfront at River Landing,” said Lloyd Isaak, manager of design and development with the Meewasin Valley Authority, on a tour of the site.

Edwards School of Business Downtown Campus

August 19, 2009
Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan to Open Downtown Campus
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 19, 2009
2009-08-04-ESB

A donation from the Nasser family of Saskatoon valued at $2.5 million has allowed the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan to establish a 1,626 sq m campus in downtown Saskatoon at 256 Third Avenue South.

To recognize the generosity of the Nasser family, the downtown campus will be named the K.W. Nasser Centre, Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan. The centre will host classes beginning Aug. 25.

“The K.W. Nasser Centre’s location enhances the student experience through its convenience, ease of access and increased opportunities to connect with members of the business community,” said Acting Dean Brooke Dobni, Edwards School of Business (ESB). “A downtown campus also brings us closer to many of our stakeholders and gives ESB the means to provide business programming in a business environment.”

The new campus will be used for:
- new Aboriginal Business Administration Certificate Program (programming for aboriginal students to transition into the Bachelor of Commerce program),
- Master of Business Administration (MBA) program,
- executive and professional programming offered through the Business Advisory Services,
- Business Administration Certificate (BAC) program (Executive BAC and seasonal offerings of the BAC program), and
- occasional activities of other academic and service units of the university.

A grand opening will be held Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m.

Located in the heart of Saskatoon, the University of Saskatchewan is one of the leading medical doctoral universities in Canada. With 58 degrees, diplomas and certificates in over 100 areas of study, the university is uniquely positioned in the areas of human, animal and plant studies. World-class research facilities, renowned faculty and award winning students make the U of S a leader in post-secondary education.

WalMart Stonebridge Expanding??

I drove by Stonebridge yesterday and there appears to be preparations underway on the north side of the WalMart... could they perhaps be looking to add the "grocery" addition to the store finally? Anyone heard anything?
I also have to ask who the genius is who thought of placing a Subway in HomeDepot and on the Stonebridge pad near Ashley almost directly opposite each other? I was half hoping for a Starbucks in there.

I doubt they're expanding the Wal Mart, just doesn't seem very likely to me... but who knows...
I also thought the same thing about the two Subways. I don't see why they didn't bring Harvey's back to the Saskatoon Home Depots.
In regards to Starbucks, I've heard from several friends who work there, that a new location will be opening in Stonebridge. Most likely on Stonebridge Boulevard. I suspect the building on the east side of TanFx.

Hey Cricket,

You are bang on your Walmart expansion. The Walmart is expanding to have a grocery section. Walmart currently has an agreement that does not allow any other grocer in the area...this is why the Co-op site will unfortunately have a grocery store at least for quite some time.

Don't they have until month's end? Didn't I hear somewhere that Mr. Lobsinger left a cheque for month end for what they owe? Why would he have paid to come all the way to Saskatoon when he could have just been a no show and called it a day? This doesn't make sense.

Perhaps the City Manager was just reporting that the interest payment hadn't been received YET. But there's still time...

Unless Shaw Cable is running repeats of City Council, as I understood what was said, Lobsinger sent a letter today saying he needs more time to pay the outstanding interest, but is "still committed to the project."

Walmart Expands Store in Saskatoon
Stonegate location to be biggest in city

Reported By Brendan Wagner
Posted August 25, 2009 - 7:17am

The Stonegate Walmart in southeast Saskatoon hasn't been around for long, but already it's expanding.

The company is converting the store into a Supercentre, adding a bakery, deli and produce sections.

"It's one of the number one questions we have -- are we going to be getting groceries," manager Trevor Schell says. "It is a ways to go to get groceries from here."

Naturally, a bigger store will mean more jobs.

"We'll be hiring a lot more associates in the store because of the work that's needed to run the grocery business, as well as the current product that we feature right now," says Schell.

The expansion is expected to be complete by March. Schell says it will make this Wal-Mart the biggest in the city, and at 194,000 square feet, the largest retail space in the province.

Blairmore centre

About three months ago the Smart Centre web site had a site plan for Blairmore which showed two large outlets and 6 or 7 smaller sites. Checking today the site plan now calls for the Walmart store and 20 other outlets of various sizes. It looks like Lowes may not be coming but it great to see so many other spots may be there.

I tend to agree with Country... there is still time, and one news broadcast actually stated that Lobsinger left a cheque with the city dated for month end with the full amount of the interest to be despositted on that day. I'm thinking this guy has his poop in a group because he knows he's in the hot seat and doesn't want to jerk the city around anymore. Thems my thoughts.
