Odd Fellows Hall resumes move across Market Street

Odd Fellows Hall has finally made it to the north side of Market Street.

A money dispute between the contractor and the moving company stalled the historical building on the wrong side of Market Street for nearly two months before workers returned to the job site Wednesday morning...

...The building must now be moved a few feet to the east and lowered into its permanent location this weekend. A spokesman for Layton Construction, the Sandy-based contractor overseeing the move, said he expects the century-old building to have a new address by next week...

What a great collection of new social businesses on and near Main Street! The Beerhive looks pretty cool, and from what I can tell they did a great job with the Daynes Building restoration. Has anybody been there to try the food and/or brews? And does the building look as good in person as it does in Urbanboy's photos?

I don't know about the food because I haven't patronized them yet. The photos however, were just taken with my iphone; I think the place looks even better in person. It looks authentic, as though it is from the turn of the last century.

SLC updates plan submission program with online version

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City is now offering an online submission, review and tracking program it says will save taxpayers time and money.

The new program offers online plan submission and review for developers, architects, contractors and residents. The city says it will "streamline development services and interdepartmental communication."

The city highlights the new program will greatly reduce or eliminate paper consumption, printing costs, greenhouse gas emissions, drive time and phone-based inquiries to city personnel.

"Paper-based plan submission and review is a resource-intensive process that has basically been done the same way for over a century," said Salt Lake City Building Services Director, Orion Goff.

"This new program is an incredible tool for the development community, neighborhood groups, and the City," stated Becker. "Implementation of the program supports our goals to facilitate sustainable patterns of development that serve the needs and interests of all Salt Lake City residents."

According to the city, based on 2,500 building permits issued per year, Salt Lake City and its customers will save approximately, 360,000 miles driven, 512,000 pounds of paper and prevent 2,300 pounds of hydrocarbons from being released into the atmosphere annually.

The program, ProjectDox® ePlan, was developed by Avolve Software.

I just read at a local beer blog that the Beerhive serves food from Vienna Bistro next door, which is great because I've been there several times and the food is awesome.

Salt Lake's got a good thing going now. I didn't realize how quickly CCC is coming up.


I have a question, regarding the new federal courthouse on West Temple, where Port O'Call used to be. What will become of the Frank Moss Courthouse on Main? Isn't it already a federal courthouse?

The Beerhive Pub is awesome. The beer is great, food was good. I really appreciate that the building has not lost its historic roots during the modernization of the building. I really, really appreciate the ice inlay in the bar top to keep your beer or diet coke cold. I have been with friends a few times and always had a great time. It's a very friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The game room in the basement is crowded but fun. I will probably drop by after the concert at Gallivan tonight!

The new courthouse is simply an expansion of the existing. It will be it's own separate building with it's own (Borg Cube) design, but will be connected to the Moss courthouse. From my understanding the new one will sit MUCH closer to the existing courthouse than it will to W. Temple. There will be a large (most likely, unfriendly) plaza fronting 400 S and W. Temple.

I hope the Plaza will be at least tasteful, and not some vast expanse of concrete. Something that will soften the harsh modernism of the Courthouse

Some highschool friends of mine took me to that place in the early 90's- all overgrown n scary! So glad its open to the public now. Wasn't it gonna be razed for some apartments or condos or something?? I'm pro development but I much prefer the garden- theres nothing quite like it!

Man... I'm in Boston right now, and I've got to say... if Salt Lake City had everything going on here, none of us would have anything to complain about. No surface parking, busy street-life, tall buildings, retail on street level, and so on.

If I could mix this with Utah's outdoors... I would be a happy man.

The thing is Salt Lake is gaining more and more of those things you describe each year. When you look at how much brown earth has been converted to new development, and how many parking lot's have become monumental buildings and beautiful parks over the past ten years downtown, it's astounding. One thing is for sure, Boston will never have Salt Lake's magnificient mountains and canyons.

...The RDA has received interest in the hotels from three developers, who have until Sept. 3 to present financing and renovation plans.

The buildings could be remodeled or torn down and rebuilt...

It's great to be upbeat about downtown SLC, but Boston is literally hundreds of years ahead of us in terms of urban development.

I am not saying that it could not but the thing about Boston, SF, NYC, Chicago Philly, Seattle etc is street intimacy. I mean Pittsburgh has done a marvelous job of remolding its downtown. If you were ever in Pittsburgh, say 10 years ago, you would never have thought it possible.

SLC is making its first concerted effort, that I have seen, to focus on the downtown. Really something that I never thought would happen.

Now if every SLC block had a Regent street or Social Hall Avenue or whatever it is called now, then it would be a different story. That is not going to happen.

Then again...you nailed it. SLC has become a truly viable city...one of the cities that is going straight up. PLUS...as you said...it has THE MOUNTAINS.

I know of no other city that has that intimacy and size.

From what I know about this, it all depends on which developer comes in with the best and most feasible idea and if their ideas include restoration or demolition. That is really a prime location to create another vibrant block extending from the Gallivan block, I think it could really start to bring downtown a little further east. It will be interested to see what is submitted and eventually accepted.
