Great pics LSM! I know what you mean about this weather...sheesh. That's why the majority of my recent shots have been in the early evening.

Some more neighborhood views around South Austin from Friday and Sunday. I went and grabbed a few new ones I've noticed recently. The Austonian is really sticking up in some places now.

This is from behind the baseball fields at Garrison Park. It's on the backside of the park near the train tracks. The view is looking north of course, towards Stassney Lane.

360 and Frost show up here too, but 360 hardly ever does, and you really can't see it with your naked eye. It does show up nicely at night though. Frost you'll notice, is just about hidden from view now by The Austonian. There's a street that runs off of Manchaca Road along side the park (Parkside Road). It's a really nice neighborhood. Some of the houses that back up to the park have this for their view.

Zoomed out, in real life it appears bigger than this. I just wanted to show the lights.

That is Crockett High School to the left. My old school.

This is a first. A view of a downtown building from the jogging track at Crockett. It sure would have made things more interesting if the building had been there when I was in school. lol

You can always catch the best sunsets down there.

I spotted this view a couple of weeks ago on Woodhue Drive near William Cannon. Don't see it? Look on the left side of the pic above the roof of that white building. See something sticking up?

Zoomed in. This is another first. I've never seen a downtown building here.

A little farther north on Woodhue just south of William Cannon, is this view of Spring. I'd seen it before when turning onto Woodhue. This was taken from the northbound sidewalk on Woodhue.

The large Texas flag at the end of the street says "Texas needs Kinky".

From the railroad overpass on William Cannon.

This is from the Shell station at South First and William Cannon. This is across the street from Bedichek Middle School, which was my middle school, and the filming location of Dazed and Confused! You can see Frost of course too, and I hadn't ever noticed it, but if you look to the left on the horizon, that looks like 300 West Sixth. 360, One American Center, Frost and now The Austonian all show up there, but I didn't realize anything shorter than that would.

From a driveway on South First near Eberhart Lane, between William Cannon and Stassney. There's actually an auto parts store there. This is one view I'm anxiously watching. If anything tall goes in at Seaholm and Green, it will surely stick up here front and center on South First.

This was taken at Turtle Creek Boulevard and Cougar Drive. You can see Frost at this spot too, but it wasn't showing up. The Austonian partially blocks it, and the trees do too. It's quite noticeable at night, and in the winter the view is even better. This is right next to Odom Elementary School, which was my school. It's funny, but all three of my schools that I went to now have some pretty noticeable skyline views right next to them.

This last one is from Emerald Forrest Drive. And oddly enough, the best view I saw that day was right in my neighborhood.

Thanks for posting the photos Kevin. The distant skyline views I find the most fascinating at this point. There are so many areas to the west that now have views of the Austonian. It's popping over ridges left and right, particularly near Lake Travis.

Do you guys get the feeling it almost makes the town seem smaller? Keep you reminded of how close downtown is to many neighborhoods.

I noticed the "A" on Hwy 71 at the Shell Station on the Travis - Bastrop County line this past weekend.

I'm wondering, can it be seen from the 45 N Toll road flyover at IH 35 in Round Rock.

Uh, did they raise the crane for the W? It sure looks tall in that photo. About 300 feet I'd say.

It certainly appears so. It was posted in another thread that crane pieces had been delivered to the site.

Funny you should mention that. I got that feeling one time in Denver coming into the city from the mountains & you could literally see the entire metro (it seemed)...& it made Denver look so small b/c downtown seemed so close to everything. Having a downtown seem to appear out of nowhere does make it feel larger IMO.

Its interesting you should say that, because I get the same impression when viewing the 'A' from the east and southeast. Since there are somewhat 'rural' areas as little as 5 miles from the CBD, seeing downtown from those vantage points makes you realize how close the urban 'edge of 'town' is from downtown.

Pittsburgh comes to mind. Their downtown is really not that much larger than Austin's (Call it Austin + T. Stacey and Seaholm size)... but it feels gigantic in comparison.

Your introduction to downtown Pittsburgh from the airport is driving out of a tunnel onto one of their many yellow bridges going over one of their rivers and just BAM downtown is right in front of you.

Imagine if downtown austin were somehow completely blocked from sight until you hit the Congress bridge.. it's pretty much the same effect.

I've always wanted to visit Pittsburgh. The topography has resemblances to that of Austin's. But unlike Austin, the CBD sits in a rather deep valley. Also, the urban areas of the city are heavily wooded, which further obscures the skyline from numerous vantage points.

I think this picture, as posted by forum member Evergrey, illustrates your observation:

EDIT: For reference, the tall glass tower (One PPG Place), is comparable in height to The Austonian (635 vs 683ft)

Seattle's like that, too. There are some places 20 miles away where you can see the 900-foot Columbia Center and various other skyscrapers sticking up, but there are also places only about a mile from the core that you can't see anything because of the hills.

'course, I live under the financial district, so it's impossible for me to miss any of those buildings.
