CTV British Columbia: Canada Line commuters locked out of terminal

Quote:
Commuters trying to board the first train on the official first day of operations for the new $2 billion Canada Line Tuesday were greeted by a nasty surprise: Locked doors.

Travelers who arrived at Waterfront Station for the 4:50 a.m. departure were unable to get into the station, which doesn't open until 5:30 a.m.

"This is ridiculous," one hopeful rider told CTV News after being shut out.

Several people opted to jump into waiting taxis, while others lugged their bags to an alternate but hard to find -- and unmarked -- entrance a block away.

Paying fares also proved problematic. Some people reported the terminals would not accept debit or credit payments.

TransLink's Drew Snider told ctvbc.ca the machines were in working order, and do accept all cards, but some riders encountered difficulties because of the new technology.

"You need to swipe your cards through quite quickly to make it work which is very different from the SkyTrain system," he said.

"Because of the new technology some people weren't aware. It sounds a bit complicated but it won't be once people get rolling."

Once aboard the trains, people were much happier.

Claude Brunelle, a longtime Vancouver airport employee, said he's been waiting decades for his inaugural ride.

"I've been working at the airport since June 1980 and I've been taking the bus off and on since then so I've been waiting for this since then," he said.

CTV British Columbia's Stephen Smart put the new Canada Line to the test, comparing commute times between the new rapid transit line and the bus.

On Monday, Smart took the 98 B-line from Lansdowne in Richmond into Vancouver's Waterfront Station. It took 40 minutes.

On Friday, he did the same commute using the Canada Line, at a time total of 24 minutes -- 16 minutes quicker than the bus.

There is also an enterance on Granville St. so people could have used that enterance instead of the one through 'The Station'. This was hopefully a 1sy mornkng glitch.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 18TH (DAY 2) - CANADA LINE RIDERSHIP STATISTICS
- 4:30 am to 9:30 am: 9,000 riders
- as of 2 pm: 33,000 riders
- expected by evening rush hour: 50,000 riders

Day Two brings lighter traffic — and parking issues — to Canada Line

By Kelly Sinoski, Vancouver Sun
August 18, 2009 3:32 PM

METRO VANCOUVER - Some Canada Line commuters in Richmond are finding there’s no such thing as a free park.

At least two vehicles were towed from the Richmond Centre parking lot Tuesday afternoon after security staff saw their drivers exiting the lot and heading to the Richmond-Brighouse station, mall spokeswoman Leslie Matheson said.

Another three vehicles were seen coming into the parking lot and turning around after noticing the tow truck, she said.

On opening day Monday, when more than 85,000 people lined up for hours for a free ride on the train, some 30 warning tickets were also handed out.

“Our parking lot is for the exclusive use of our customers while they’re shopping,” she said.

Shopping centres in both Vancouver and Richmond say they will bolster security to ensure Canada Line customers aren’t using their lots for daily parking.

Canada Line officials have said there is no need — or room — for park-and-ride lots as the stations connect with transit and are mostly in high-density urban areas. As a result there is only one park-and-ride facility, at Bridgeport Station, along the 19-kilometre line stretching from Vancouver to Richmond and the airport.

That lot is owned and operated by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, which owns the adjacent River Rock Casino Resort. Parking spaces will be reserved for 1,200 vehicles during the day and 600 vehicles at night at a cost of $2.

Meanwhile, passengers were still flocking to the Canada Line Tuesday albeit at a slower than pace than on opening day when they didn’t have to pay the $3.75 single trip fare. InTransitBC spokesman Steve Crombie said about 9,000 people had boarded the train by 9:30 this morning and the numbers grew to 33,000 just after 2 p.m.

More than 50,000 boardings are expected to be recorded by the evening rush hour.

Crombie said light-beam technology is used to automatically count the number of people coming into the fare-paid zone. TransLink plans to institute fare-gates or turnstiles, along with smart cards, at the Canada Line stations, but not until 2012.

A “request for qualifications” — to see who is qualified to do the project — is expected this fall. The $100-million project, which would be funded by the provincial and federal governments.

Crombie said the two busiest stations Tuesday were Waterfront and the airport, suggesting people were still checking out the new Vancouver-Richmond line.

Some passengers, however, were having trouble paying for their fares because of new technology in the ticket-vending machines.

TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said the machines accept debit and credit card transactions, but the upgraded technology requires the credit or debit card to be left in the slot longer than on SkyTrain ticket machines.

Passengers must wait until three yellow lights have lit up on the TVM debit slot before taking the card out, he said.

Ridership on the Canada Line isn’t expected to increase until Sept. 7 when the transportation authority will cancel some buses or stop them at Bridgeport or Brighouse stations to funnel more people onto the Canada Line.

At that time, the 98 B-Line between Vancouver and Richmond will be cancelled. Long-haul buses from White Rock and Delta will be rerouted to Bridgeport Station rather than going into Vancouver, while local Richmond buses will be stopped at Richmond-Brighouse.

There was even a bunch of people with actual luggage getting off at Waterfront Station.

So weird to see people be able to come from the airport like that

Also, A TON of little kids (6 or 7 years old) on what looked like a field trip, or daycare type thing.

according to CUTA this was the biggest federal contribution to a transit project (is this common knowledge here?):
Quote:
Largest Ever Federal Transit Investment Bears Fruit in Vancouver
The opening of the Canada Line in Vancouver represents the transit project with the single largest federal funding component to date. Originally referred to as the Richmond-Airport-Vancouver (RAV) rapid transit line, its name was subsequently modified to reflect the large amount of federal investment.

At $450 million, the federal government has contributed over 22% of the capital budget, which represents the largest single public sector share of the $2 billion total capital cost. Other funding partners include TransLink (17%), the Province of British Columbia (13%), the Greater Vancouver Airports Authority (13%) and the private sector consortium (35%). The name also distinguishes it from the other rail rapid transit lines in Metro Vancouver, such as the existing Expo and Millennium lines.

Temporary. They're building an expansion area down there.

If it does reach 100 000 riders within the first year i really do hope they purchase more cars quickly. I guess we could see the c-cars andt he extra 10 meters within a decade? To me that would be good. There is nothing wrong with a 3 car train, even in Japan there were a few JR lines that only operated 3 car trains (and the platforms were only 50 or 60 meters, and this was in Kobe/Osaka!)

He also mentioned that we finished yesterday at just under 100,000 trips, according to ProTransBC public affairs manager Jason Chan!
So its moving more than 6000 people per hour today, which is the number they anticipated for yesterday's opening event?

i just got home - took a ride from waterfront to YVR - lots of people actually using it to get the the airport - good to see...

it wasn't too busy - about 80% of the people got off at YVR and I spotted many of them having lunch or checking out the new obs deck

a lot of people walked into the airport and made loud comments on how aweosme the airport was... and how they can here more often...

the trains weren't too crowded, not of the stations were overcrowded, loads of room even during rush hour - the trains were packed though coming back - well Richmond bound ones were packed

i got off at oakridge and broadway - not bad - lots of shoppers using it

it was a nice smooth ride

I wouldn't recommend transferring at granville during rush hour though - 3 full no one could get on cars passed me bay at granville finally i squished in and some woman said she was really uncomfortable with me so close i said uh nothing i can do - meanwhile the seat area could have taken a lot more standees - stupid people

anyway never travelling rush hour again i will drive - screw transit

I have a few more stations with detail photos. Waiting for upload... will post later on. I've had more fare checks today on the Canada Line than I ever had in two years on the SkyTrain. Anyways, a few notes here:

1) Finally hearing the announcements, they pronounce "Langara-49th" and miss out on "avenue." Same case for Oakridge.
2) They updated the announcement message at Bridgeport: looks like they listen to the forums from "This train is for YVR-Airport. Please change at Bridgeport for Richmond-Brighouse" to "The next station is Bridgeport. Please change at Bridgeport for trains to Richmond-Brighouse."
3) The announcer system says "The next train to depart is for ____" at termini and "The next train arriving in the ___ platform is for _____" at all others.
4) The door closing chime does not rings once. If you hold the doors, the doors attempt to close slowly without any chime. This is what happened at Waterfront when a staff member held the doors for an old lady. How nice.
5) Many fare checks as I said before. Smart. There are attendants at almost every station, directing, checking, and assisting people. Many even walk passengers down to the platform to show them how to ride the system. Very helpful!

most stations have more than three. Count the ones at Waterfront, Bridgeport, YVR-Airport, Broadway-City Hall, etc.

Everything was open today.
They really should, in my opinion, put in more machines. I hope this is not a trend of these machines breaking down too often.
