^oh, why can't they just rent some other places for office space.

I know that the retail portion would be available for rent in April 2010

I ride my bicycle home from work almost every day, and often ride the perimeter of the Convention Centre and it seems as though it's getting more popular by the day. More people strolling/cycling along the perimeter and two of the last three days there has been filming (one day it was a commercial and the other day it was a television show).

I really love the place and the green roof is starting to really fill in nicely. Overall, it's a fantastic addition to the urban endowment.

^I saw a commercial being filmed at Harbour Green Park last week. Perhaps it was the same one you saw. It was apparently for an Italian baby stroller:

And here are some convention centre shots I took:

"In a new, low-carbon economy, where people are looking at building larger group buildings in a green way, reducing their carbon footprint, utilizing wood makes all the sense in the world, and has a great story to tell."
it was not that long ago when using wood meant logging and its subsequent deforestation. this was the greatest of all evils where people did weird things like chained themselves to trees to save them from the beastly loggers.

funny how things have changed. now cutting down a tree is a good thing. Yeah carbon footprint!!!

Earthquake-proof wood house survives 7.5 quake

this could be a huge boom to BC's forest industry

-------------------
If you’re in search of a home that can withstand even the most powerful natural disasters, the solution might reside in the nearest tree. A team of researchers from five universities are currently working on ways to make wood earthquake-proof. If they succeed, the world may soon see cheap, sustainable wooden homes that can hold up even when earthquakes shake them to their cores.

Appropriate timing for this

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There is a blue 6,000 pound greeting at Vancouver's waterfront to greet tourists. Four European artists have designed a 58 foot tall water drop - titled "The Drop" - on the seawall next to the new convention centre.

In the words of the artists, the sculpture is meant to pay homage to the element of water and untamable forces of nature as well as the complexity of our waterfront.

I'm all for public art, but we couldn't find a couple local artists to do this?

That looks great, and is oh so appropriate for Vancouver. I'm definitely going to check that out tomorrow. Looks like a great place for some prominent public art too.

I'm guessing it is part of the 2010 Sculpture Biennale which exhibits works by artists from all over. Here is apparently the first one installed which I noticed entheosfog snapped a pic of not too long ago:

The first sculpture installed for Vancouver Biennale 2010 is The STOP by Chinese-American artist Michael Zheng. Zheng's works often include ordinary objects taken out of their usual context.

Installed simultaneously in two locations (Charleson Park and Vanier), these shots are from the Charleson Park location.

The drop -- very cool! i really like it. hopefully it will be lite at night.

"couldn't find a couple local artists to do this?"

It was an open competition for this piece and the best submission won.
besides, it's great to have work from artists that arent always local. i would have died if we ended up with another totem pole.
