yeah, what is the deal with the Oakridge sign? How are people supposed to get out of the station?

I wish that bus stop outside Oakridge Station could be more integrated with each other. The benches could have just been installed onto the concrete walls against the station.

The Oakridge sign is actually relatively new, was installed just before Canada Line construction began.

It definitely does need to come down.

Looking at pictures from the other direction makes it look like there's a lot more room, but yeah I agree it should come down. I guess they put it up there at the last minute as some short-sighted attempt to advertise..

Regarding Oakridge, the plan is to build out the mall to the corner of 41st and Cambie.

speaking of the Oakridge project, anyone know when that project is to undergo? I'm actually pretty excited about how that area is going to change quite dramatically.

Are they going to redesign the exterior of the mall, or is it going to look the same?

I believe they'll start after 2010.

The exterior of the mall will be more or less redesigned with a ton of streetfront retail, podiums and condo/office towers, greenery, and a new city street going through the existing outdoor ground level parkades (to be mostly replaced with developments).

I believe they are also adding a second floor to the mall, so you can say goodbye to the rooftop parkade (and it'll be replaced with a green roof).

I'm really excited about this development. Can't wait to see some more renderings of it all. I wonder if this development will spark a more increase of density in the area. Cause from the rendering posted above, there will be some towers, and there's not a lot of residential/office towers in the area. Hm.

Couldn't agree more. That Oakridge sign is really quite ugly, and it doesn't match with the Oakridge station now being there.

ya things have been REALLY really quiet eh? you would this translink would be all over a TOD at this site.

maybe it will get used during the games for something or another.....

I've heard that the new Transit Centre on the Fraser is too small, as they only bought half the site and cheaped out on the other half. Someone else bought the other half, and they would have to rent the land to use. So, they're still using Marpole.

I'm looking at the signs and having seen the signage for 49th Ave - Langara I think SNC-Lavalin used either one of two Microsoft fonts due to the lower-case numbers:

Candara
Corbel

The only way to tell however would be to take a picture of the Bridgeport sign. I can't see it very clearly in Tafryn's images but it looks like those old-style gs with the two holes... which would then indicate they used Candara.

@ Mr.X: Are you talking about the Marine Drive Gateway developers who bought some land around where the loop is?

I really don't understand all the anger towards the business who lost tons of money on this endeavor, and managed to recoup it via a lawsuit. The reality is those businesses were left hanging while the entire street-scape was a war zone they did not expect for nearly 2 years. She proved her case in a court of law. She went at it alone while many other businesses are still in the middle of a class-action suit (so its not like she was some wild loner while everyone else was pleased with their treatment).

I support the Canada Line, but I feel for any business that was caught in its construction wake. They were treated shabbily and were victim to the "cheapest" option for construction.

The argument about future business has little value to a small business that has to make ends meet year to year.

Disagreement I can understand, but it's getting a bit old reading the constant derision and questioning of the facts behind this woman's already decided case. The bitterness towards a stranger - and local retailer - is unbecoming. Why not go rant at a townhall down south instead? It makes as much sense.

This is great. I've heard lots of people say that it's old and ugly. And it needs more shops too

As far as the new Vancouver Transit Center i think there is room to expand it . there is a fairly substantial gravel area behind the back row of the bus yard that is empty but has street lights , so itis set up like a parking lot but unused.

Yeah, i thought the same. but then i remembered trying to find a metro station in paris... the entrances were pretty much just large holes in the ground! (albeit, pretty holes)

The Oakridge Transit Centre is currently being used to install the new bus communications equipment / video cameras, etc. on the buses. When that's over, the yard will be surplus.

My sentiments exactly. As much as I love the expansion of rapid transit here in the Lower Mainland, it is imperative that Translink (or whoever else is responsible for construction) be a good neighbour. What happened to those businesses was highly unprofessional and the courts agreed.

This court decision is a shot across the bow of Translink and will facilitate a much smoother construction process for both the Evergreen line and the UBC extension.
