For some reason when I look at this building, I think 45 stories, not 56. It looks much shorter than it really is, at least to me. Anyone else have this impression?

I drove by downtown today, didnt get to go downtown but had a nice view and this tower definitely looks 56 stories tall. It makes an incredible impression on the skyline.

It's definitely taller than everything else by a good bit. I was in San Antonio last month and was shocked to see The Austonian later that day, and I could definitely tell it was the same height of the Tower of the Americas at the main roof. With the crane too, it's about the same height as the Tower of the Americas' antenna. Austin's skyline for the first time really, looked more impressive to me than San Antonio's did. I've always had small city goggles on while visiting other cities thinking of them as larger than Austin with taller skylines, but that's definitely changing these days. It's kind of strange actually.

Maybe its the balconies. You don't see man 56 stories towers with balconies on them.

I think it depends on the angle, too. When looking at it from north or south it looks very tall and slender.

SATX has a very disapointing skyline for a city its size. I think Austin passed it 4-5 years ago.

If Austin can get one of it's other two big boys off the ground (Seaholm, Stacey) we will enter into the "big downtown for a city our size" category.

Totally agree... The building looks most dominant from northern and southern angles/approaches (not to say they are the only). The view from Mopac and 183 absolutely highlights the relative height of the Austonian, compared with the rest of the skyline.

Also, the S Congress approach into downtown is amazing. It's almost overwhelming in height. I found myself just staring, in a daze, at the building for blocks at a time (much to the consternation of some pedestrians I'm sure

).

^^^ My favorite views of The Austonian thus far are from the SE and SW. It emphasizes the height, but gives the tower a bit more substantial appearance (in width...as compared with the slender N-S views).

A photo from yesterday driving by downtown. My parents absolutely hate downtowns so all I got was a fleeting glimpse of the Austonian while driving out to Marble Falls.

Its a terrible photo but oh well. But wow does this building make a huge impact. I remember going to downtown Austin when I was a little kid about 10 years ago and not being very impressed by its downtown but now, its getting to be quite impressive. Lets hope the few other highrises proposed get built soon!

^Wow, I totally concur... the first time I visited Austin wwhen the Frost tower was under construction (2003??). It felt like a city about the size of Little Rock... in fact at that time, I thought Little Rock's skyline was a bit more impressive. What a difference 6 years makes!!!

The only thing that makes me sad about the Austonian... when it tops out, Texas' next tallest construction project is like 10 stories shorter

We've got to start building up.

21c is a project I always forget about that would make a huge impact if it actually gets off the ground at some point..

It and 401 W. 6th are sort of forgotten projects on this board. I guess we need the new post office to be built before 401 6th even becomes a possibility...

So Austin has 4-6 500+ footers proposed at this point.

T Stacey is 800+
Green has a 720 footer (and two other that look in the neighborhood of 500 ft)

Man, if we could just get 1-2 of these off the ground I would be happy. I vote T. Stacey and the water treatment redevelopment.. but I don't think my vote counts

Once the W gets up to about the 20th floor, there will be just 2 skyscrapers here that would have existed before 2000. One American Center and 301 Congress are visible also which existed before that year, but they're only partially visible. This a very different skyline than it was in 1999. At first glance, it would be nearly unrecognizable.

^^^For your statement on the 2 skyscrapers. Don't forget the One Congress Plaza and 100 Congress. Also, the JP Morgan Tower.

I was talking about One Congress Plaza and 100 Congress. Those are the only two skyscrapers that you can see very well. One American Center and 301 Congress are partially visible. And the JPMorgan building isn't the most unique building around. I doubt most people who aren't familiar with our skyline would recognize that building.

Man, I moved from Austin to Dallas in 2005 and what a huge difference between then and now !! Thanks to everyone that posted all the great pics !!
