Hamilton TV antenna reception

After a year in Hamilton and getting lousy antenna reception - paticular CBC Toronto ---- I am getting it digitally now - CBC must have just started it. It is fantastic.

Presently I have a $35 antenna from Canada Computers to an LCD 22 inch TV that has an ATSC tuner - necessary for digital TV. The best config would be with an antenna power rotor (Wintronics has them Centenial Pkwy and Barton) for about $50, I think they are made by DigiWave....
And mount the antenna as high up as possible.

But I have mine inside next to the TV and adjust it manually - if and when necessary. Getting about 12 stations. CHCH is on channel 11 >analog signal (ie non-digital) and on channel 18-1 as digital.

HD and digital TV is amazing. BTW no cable or sat.

Agreed, CBC analog sucks here. CBC has had digital for at least 3.5 years, because I got it in Toronto (CTV as well) a few years ago (Summer 2005). Hoorah, for the OTA guys.

YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY
----------------------------------------------

That said I believe that the TV stations listed are possible by the use of an antenna. I have been using one (indoors next to the tv for manual adjustment of direction) for about 1 and 1/2 years. Some stations need to be tuned in with the antenna and some are fickel regarding time of day - actually after midnight the signals are much better.

What you get and pay for with basic cable is a total rip-off. And I agree with the broadcasters regarding cable. ie. what they get for free they charge for.

Now that I have DSL I have found and am looking for the TV options iva the net - they are out there....

I get all of those channels listed and a few others with my homemade antenna. The other channels are CFTO channel 9, TVO channel 19 and CITY channel 57. I also get channel 25 which is the French CBC channel.

I made my antenna for less than $10. A few coat hangers, a piece of 2x4 and a store bought balum as well as some r59 cable that I bought at Steel City Surplus.

I am in the process of making something a little more permanent that I can mount outside on an old tv mast that my neighbor has. They have plans all over the internet if you are inclined to do the work yourself. Just google Homemade TV antenna.

Following my recent ‘Canada’s CTV Puts Full Primetime TV Episodes Online’ post, my commenters (see here and here) have justly schooled me in Canada’s current TV episode streaming offerings. While I was aware of the rather piddling offerings that had been available over the last few years, as of late, it seems, there is a lot more on offer than I was aware.

Case in Point – GlobalTV.com’s increasingly impressive array of full-episode primetime and daytime TV streaming offerings. Global is one of Canada’s three nation-wide broadcasters. It carries about half of all U.S. primetime network content.

The index of shows available from GlobalTV.com is here. Only clips are available for some shows like Survivor and ET Canada. But recent full episodes (plus indicated bonus materials) for the following shows are available:"

About Us
Find Internet TV is the Internet TV Directory.

Find Internet TV is a growing one-stop-shop for locating sites broadcasting video online by providing a feature-rich directory and program Listings for live content. Unlike other sites that search and show video clips on their site, Find Internet TV finds, categorizes, tags, and lists sites that show live and on-demand video. One may be able to find a 2 minute clip of Desperate Housewives or a NFL highlight on a video aggregating website, but they won't know where to watch it live or in full length and miss out on the special features broadcasting sites provide.

The Find Internet TV directory includes sites broadcasting from all over the world, in different languages, and in different time zones. Sites listed in our directory range from large media networks such as ESPN, Discovery, NBC to user-generated video blogs such as Lost in Baghdad, HotRoast, and Wallstrip to niche sites such as CurlTV, VeggieVision, and DrinksTV."

http://www.cogeco.ca/cable/on/en/res.../analogue.html

" Classic Cable Analogue Value Pack

You get a variety of local stations, major networks and top specialty channels like TSN, Slice, BNN and more.

Starting at $27.99 per month
--------------------------------------------------
All the Classic Cable channels plus popular specialty channels such as A&E, Discovery, Family Channel, CNN and many more. And you can hook up three additional TVs to the Cogeco analogue cable signal at no extra charge.

Starting at $46.99 per month"

_____________________________________________________

For what the cable company is offering vs what you get Over The Air (OTA - via antenna) is false economy. When I first moved to Hamilton one thing I noticed and was sort of amazed at was all the Sat. Dishes, and quite a few houses had multi dishes.

Soon after I moved here I went to Limeridge Mall (on UpperWentworth- I always think it is UpperJames) and went to the cogeco store, they always seem to have a special of 19.95 for classic cable for 1 year. But most of that is available via Antenna. From what I have saved from cable, I bought an LCD TV that has ATSC which means that the tuner can receive digital and HD signals via antenna.

Now via the net I can get CBC national and local, BBC, CNN plus alot more, I will have to upgrade my DSL for a better "stream" but that make more economic sense, when paid anually. Finding the on line TV is not necessarily easy, but is improving. Astalavesta cable, I cant think of how many years I have been without now, and you have stopped spamming/skamming me for some time now, even though you think it is your right and you have stupidvisors to get the subscriptions for every house on every street. Just think if you figure at least $50 per house - per month for every house within one block of your house....gesh........

If the Cable companies were reasonable, alright ....they are not and never have been and never will be....get your TV via the net and OTA via antenna.

I could not agree more.

Has anyone found a way to circumvent Hulu blocking non-US watchers? Hotspot worked for me at some point in the past, but not anymore. Are there other less commonly known free VPN services?
