I believe it is another club going in.

Exchange place is my favorite part of downtown. It is such a unique collection of old buildings. The Commercial Club building is certainly a treasure. I walk by it just about every day. I love the location. I love the uniqueness. But I also love that it was the center of back door business deals for decades. Plus, who can forget that it was the home of the Vortex night club for a long time. Ohh the damage that must have brought to the inside.

You should contact Dr. Nelson and extend an invitation to him to give a presentation to both your planning commission and City Council. He did that for SLC several months ago. It is a good presentation and he is a nationally known expert.

On the SLC front, as Wilf Sommerkorn mentioned in his blog, the City is actively planning for many things, most of them centered around future transit and increasing housing in Downtown. The Planning Division is heavily involved in planning for North Temple, State Street, downtown street cars, updating zoning codes and individual projects that are all aimed at improving downtown and bringing more people into the downtown area. It truely is a fun time to be a planner in SLC.

This is all very cool stuff! Certainly unimaginable when I was growing up in the early 80's.

This is so progressive. Even mentioning Vancouver...means progressive construction. Of course the SLC physical spacial advantage would never equal a condensed Vancouver but it does mean that there is at least a thought of making the downtown totally active, accessible and attractive.

This is only my opinion: I really think that the days of competing Salt Lake valley areas is about to become the real establishment of a dedicated downtown core that WILL be the heartbeat. That is awesome!

The new club occupying the space of former Cabana Club is called "The Green Pig." Any rennovation would do that space well. It's situated in a pretty good area, considering it's a half block away from Trax stations.

I loved the Vortex, but it does seem like there was some damage to the interior of the Commercial Club. But I was in the building last Wednesday on business, and it looks really fantastic now. The current tenants, McCann Erickson (who just this year took over the whole building; they were previously just on certain floors), have done a good job keeping/restoring the original interior (or at least what passes for original) while updating it for their purposes, particularly the reception area that is just inside the main entrance. I hope more businesses in historic buildings will follow their lead.

I loved the Vortex, too... and the Commercial Club bldg has long been one of my favorites in SLC.

Glad to hear the inside has been fixed up. I have way too many memories of the whoretex, some good some bad, but I did spend a lot of time there back in the college days.

Did the Vortex have hanging cages with Go-Go dancers? I heard it could be a pretty wild place. I heard that from a pretty wild Australian, LOL!!

It did have cages, but only occasionally were they occupied by go-go dancers. usually they were occupied just by the patrons.

It was a pretty crazy place, much crazier than anything I've been in SLC before or since.

The cages weren't hanging, just on platforms. I used to be a marketing rep for Sony Music and one time at a conference in NYC, a group of us went out to the Limelight in NYC.

The NYC rep had this attitude like "Oh, you're from SLC, you must be sheltered. The Limelight is going to be a real eye opener for you." And once inside the Limelight, I was like, "Ehhh... This isn't anything I haven't seen back in SLC [at places like the Vortex]." The Vortex isn't the craziest club I've ever been in in SLC, though. There have been several very interesting/diverse clubs in SLC.

Whoever at Forbes, or anyone else, who doesn't think SLC has decent nightlife, hasn't tried. I've been to clubs all over: NYC, LA, SF, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Sydney/Melbourne, Australia, Norway, and ummm... Sweden. SLC's nightlife ranks right up there with the best I've experienced in these other places considered more metropolitan.

Things are always happening when you go to cities. You actively search for the night life. Certainly one of the best parts of going to a city. You are focused on finding them.

I travel a lot in what I do. SLC is way better than when I lived there but I am sorry, it is not close to any of the major cities.

Hey, I am not saying it is not making great strides because it is light years beyond when I lived there. In the large cities the nightlife is in your face.

It is all relative to what nightlife means to you. Up there with NYC, SF, Berlin,
London, Boston...Sydney, Seattl.e CHICAGO??? I do not think so!

It certainly is more active in SLC. It is just active with a sedative.

Just my opinion. Not a challenge.
