I've got a random question for the board. Does anyone know if it would be possible for a business (law firm) to lease, say, a couple of floors at the Austonian? We're looking for office space and I had heard that they weren't finishing out the top floors because of bad market conditions and/or just selling them as shells for big buyers. I'm guessing there may be some zoning or contractual reasons that wouldn't be possible -- anyone know?

Here's a shot I took late this afternoon from Mopac and 183. The Austonian absolutely towers over everything from this angle. And we still have 80 feet to go... amazing

I spotted it from a new location a few days ago in South Austin near my house. It popped up on Woodhue Drive south of William Cannon (between Matthews Lane and William Cannon). It was easily visible there clearing the trees. That is the first time I've ever seen a downtown building there. Spring also shows up just on the other side of William Cannon on Woodhue. It's only a quick slim view. If you're in the turning lane on William Cannon about to make a left onto Woodhue, keep an eye on the horizon. Spring appears dead center in the view, then quickly pops behind the trees to the right. I haven't tried yet, but I would imagine it might be visible from Woodhue on the southbound sidewalk. Again, that's another first downtown building that I've ever been able to see from Woodhue. I figured it was only a matter of time since the Ben White light towers really do tower over the horizon for almost the entire length of the street. I need to ride up there sometime on a clear day and take a few pics. It's only a 5 minute bike ride from my house.

yes austin buildings are relatively small... hehe

I was looking on the diagram page for Austin and did not see the W included.

.......so I went to...

Emporis (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/bu/sk/li/?id=101341&bt=2&ht=2&sro=0) and the W was not listed. What is up with that?

At 476' thats a big omission. At least for Austin.

It was left out on that Emporis page because that page only shows completed buildings and ones that are topped out. Notice that The Austonian is also missing!

I'm not sure why it was left out on the diagrams page. It may not be added, though, I doubt that.

For the city diagram, do all buildings. The W doesn't have a drawing. Someone needs to do that.

No glitch. That page simply shows completed highrises and ones that have reached their official structural height (topped out). The Austonian will be added to that page soon, and once the W tops out, it will also. I should know, I'm the main editor for Austin at Emporis. I added them.

Does anybody know if the Ashton is complete? I mean SkyscraperPage says it and Emporis doesn't. Anyone know?
We really need to draw some of Austin's buildings in the Diagrams. Like the W and Hilton convention Center. There's already a drawing request up for Austin...

I haven't been down there to check the base. Is everything finished? I hate this hot weather. I'm wanting to go out and ride and take pics downtown, but the heat is oppressive. And we'll probably going to get a lot of rain this fall and winter since El Nino is coming back.

Austonian is a residential building only except for the ground floor retail. The unfinished floors your referring to are the top 4 residential floors which are 8000+ SF each and are for the rich to finish out themselves with their own finishes rather than the pre-picked packages the other units will have to use. Most high end building like this leave the penthouses, certain units or whole floors as a blank slate cause those who can afford to buy can afford and want to put their touch on the unit and not what the designers of the building want.

El Nino is what is hopefully going to end one of the worst droughts in Austin's recorded history starting this Fall.

I for one am looking forward to a whole lot of overcast, rainy days this Winter. Usually we don't get as cold at night, but hardly warm up at all during the day. You'll see a lot of days where your lows and highs are both in the 40s. Sounds marvelous!

Speaking of the Austonian this weekend it will likely be moving up the crane, Why you ask? Well the top most brace that looked different then the others is gone and the jumper has moved up to the base of the crane T portion. This should be the last jump for the crane and we should really get an idea of the hight of the building after they raise the crane. I know I will try to get some pics of this last stage.

However wher i live Elnino means a mild winter with little snow. We have had mild winters so many years in a row and my kids dont remember what good sledding is. When I was young we in Lexington would get good snow every winter. Back to topic. Should we expect floor 55 to take a long time to complete. This is because of the major change of structure. Building the crown exc. And once floor 56 is complete should the remaining 35 feet of the crown go up quickly like frosts crown?

I love El Nino. It could rain half the days of the year and it wouldn't bother me. I love those winter days during El Nino when the outside temperature is about 40 degrees and there's a slow rain falling through fog that is so thick that it sometimes closes the airport. What a contrast to this summer weather!

Probably this weekend - there are three 20' sections sitting on the north side of the building.
