^ Good god. I've been around the ASU campus proper more and more since I've gone back as a student and the Barrett campus just makes me sad. It's uglier than a prison.

I like ISTB IV. It's quite a nice nod to the ASU Foundation building.

Indeed - I can't understand why they thought honors students would like to congregate in the plaza they just finished right on the corner of Apache and Rural... the huge, busy intersection will be a nice backdrop for studying.

I think they made it like that so it would be more of an entrance to ASU than an actual place to congregate. There ought to be space within the building or in between them for meeting and studying. At least I would hope so.

The problem is the whole project should've been an entrance/gateway to ASU. Instead they built a freakin' Medieval castle and they didn't even give us a sweet moat to look at.

Yeah the study plaza is on the interior away from Rural and Apache for the honors students. The plaza right on the corner allows the students, which may or may not be present at the time, to be more accessible to the hobos passing by looking for handouts.

i.e.

Hobo: "Hey bro, (as he or she <smack, smack> licks their lips in anticipation) do you have any change you can spare?

I once even had the honor to be propositioned by a 15 year old kid pimp'in his 19 year old sis for a 20 dollar blow job at the corner of Lemon and Rural a couple of years back.

A Medieval castle would've been cool. This just looks like it was designed by a crackhead who had a hookup at the cinderblock store. There is NO rhyme or reason to the exterior of this mess. It's a jumble of crap on the worst order.

The VUE is almost done and it looks pretty much exactly like the rendering: http://www.tempe.gov/Maps/DevProjectDetails.aspx?LocationID=51fd1c2d-a2b5-4d7a-a90a-4a4e32512fcc

The only thing that makes me angry about this development is that come next year it will be packed with rich college freshmen. They could have at least put the pool on street level so I can see the girlies tanning when I ride by on my bike.

I really like what's happening along the Apache Blvd corridor. Does anyone have any updates/photos of Grigio Metro on McClintock? I haven't been over there in a few months.

^ I rode the train past it last week. It's topped out and the facade is covered with scaffolding, although on the southern end on McCl., they are pulling off the scaff. so you can see the rest of the project. Looks good.

The rest of Apache still mostly looks like a shithole but it will get better (albeit slowly) over time.

I live just a few blocks away from there, I'll try to take some pics this weekend. It's just been so hot lately to do much of anything other than go swimming or hang out in the A/C in my spare time.

they should never have torn down the cool mid-century circular, domed valley national bank bldg at that corner. they did at least move the dome to storage for future use.

I totally agree. In some of the renderings for the new buildings there was this vague top down view which showed a circular object near a plaza. I was hoping they were going to use the dome as a shade structure/ramada, but I haven't head anything about it.

Thanks TAZ!

I actually like that rendering of the new ASU building. ASU is rapidly turning into more of a city school than campus style it seems.

^^^^ That's because the school itself is larger than some cities!

Pics

Can you believe that my retarded ass was out in the heat today taking pictures of stuff along Apache Blvd.

Anyway here you go.

Grigio Metro:

I think this place is called CampusSuites. It's just slightly further east on Apache from the Grigio:

This place is under renovation. The sign in the window reads "Long Wong's at The Firehouse." I wonder if it the same owners who owned Long Wong's on Mill Ave. a few years ago.

The Vue:

And ugliness itself. ASU's new honors college:

^I can't believe that's a campus gateway. Poor planning at its finest.

The firehouse building has been there forever, but I can't EVER remember it being open (even back when I was a kid). I used to spend all my summers in the nearby neighborhood.

Great pictures! I was an inspector along Line Section 5 of the light rail line which included Apache Blvd... it looks 10000x better than it used to.

Great pictures and thanks for being in the 115 heat to take them!

The Honors college looks like a lot of apartment buildings I saw in rural China. Blah. At least add some color to the exterior. The Vue is awesome. I especially like how it is built around Taco Bell.

Thanks TAZ, great update.

Phoenix should take notes as to what Tempe is doing along Apache Blvd and hopefully transform E. Washington St.
