Why all this talk about 65m platforms? Don't expect any major expansion on the Canada Line until at least 2040. 50m platforms + 55m long trains will do just fine until then. I just don't see Richmond greatly expanding, housing there is becoming overpriced for the privilege of living on soil that could liquify in the event of a major earthquake.

No, it'll be maximum 2.5m. We're just starting to get way too ahead of ourselves, unless they want to do the West Coast Express thing where we're doing 9-car and soon 10-car trains on platforms only designed for 7-cars.

No, that doesn't work. The 4-car configuration (A-C-C-B) would give you a total of 70-metres. Do all the doors fit on the 50-m plaform.

40+15+15=70

Certainly not. The max is a 3-car A-C-B format. = 55m.

Yeah, I don't think station platforms are going to need an expansion past 50m. I think any near term problems in capacity can be addressed by doubling the track to Richmond Center and extending it a bit to Granville or Blundell (with room to park and turn around trains) and getting some more trains and increasing frequency to the maximum on the Richmond Line.

But lets see what ridership is like when it opens.

^ doubling the tracks at Richmond Centre would cost quite a lot...sad that they didn't have 2 tracks there in the first place.
What they should have done is put Richmond-Brighouse station at Westminster and have another station that terminates the line at Blundell.

There were supposed to be stations at both Westminster Hwy and at Saba Road (or one of those streets) - but the two were combined as a cost savings measure (and the City's desire to move Alderbridge Station to the south to Lansdowne (to line up with the Lansdowne pedestrian greenway to the Oval) made the change more reasonable in terms of station spacing).
From what I understand, Richmond also spearheaded the single tracking to reduce the overhead shadowing. Just be glad the single track wasn't installed around the future Capstan Station site as was planned at one time before it was decided to upgrade it to double track.

Guys the 50m platfroms (55m trains) at max frequency it can handle the same amount of people as the Expo does right now. There is no way that the demand on that line will come anywhere close to that anytime soon. By the time it does then our kids will start talking about building a new line down Knight st.

It is too early to tell, never underestimate people desperate to get on a train in rush hour, not matter how packed it is

but we may not know the real answer soon, since Vancouver main line is advertised as reliable 3-minute frequency(so people know the next train comes soon), that is a vast improvement over the always delayed 98b sometimes you have to wait another 15 minutes or more

Some more changes can be found in the database since my last post (new changes are in red)...

C92	6:25a	15	30	15	-	7:16p
C94	8:50a	-	30	30	-	8:47p

A = 351 White Rock Centre / Bridgeport Station
B = 405 Cambie / Brighouse Station
C = 407 Gilbert / Brighouse Station
D = 601 Boundary Bay / Bridgeport Station
When you combine 403 and 410, you get a bus every 3.5 min during peak.. that's a lot of buses under Canada Line. And if you add in 480 south of Lansdowne, then there's a bus every 2.5 minutes!

Some other changes I've found, although not related to Canada Line...
Code:
route	first	mor	mid	aft	night	last
135	5:06a	5	7	7	15	2:22a
143	6:32a	10	20	10	-	10:26p
C20	7:15a	20	20	20	30	12:30a
Also, it seems like they're changing the nightbus schedule as well...

I hate to burst your bubble, but it's red because of the zone colours:

How can it be expected to open earlier than expected - isn't that some sort of expected double negative or something - poor English at the least.

What a —. Love the way they conveniently ignored the grab-fare to the airport. Translink is starting to annoy me with this stupidity.

Canada Line could be in service by mid-August
Opening day will be free to public

Updated: Thu Jul. 16 2009 20:43:47
ctvbc.ca

The Canada Line rapid transit system is expected to open earlier than expected, possibly as soon as mid-August. That's nearly four months ahead of schedule.

Expected to cost around $2 billion, it will make Vancouver the first Canadian city to have a rapid transit link between its downtown core and its airport.

The massive project is expected to change the way tens of thousands of commuters get around the Lower Mainland area.

But before it can open, there are still plenty of finishing touches being done at all the stations along the Canada Line route.

"I think people have been seeing the trains run as we've been testing them,'' said Steve Crombie, spokesman for InTransit BC, the company contracted to build and help fund the project.

" I think there has been a lot of curiosity and interest in what is this thing and how does it work."

"We have 19 kilometres of line and 16 stations,'' he said.

Once the system opens, each one-way fare to and from Vancouver International Airport is expected to cost between $5 and $6.

Travelling at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, it will take passengers 25 minutes to get from Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver to the airport.

Transportation engineers and planners at the City of Vancouver say the Canada Line is expected to help ease traffic congestion, by getting more commuters out of cars, cutting pollution.

At full capacity, each Canada Line train will hold 400 passengers. (*cough*) They will be running trains every three minutes during peak service. The cars are much wider than SkyTrain, allowing them to accommodate luggage.

Travellers will ride for free on opening day, which could come as early as mid-August.
