Mobile aims to get back to No. 2

http://www.al.com/news/press-register/metro.ssf?/base/news/1246871754222040.xml&coll=3

Quote:
Mobile officials said they believe recent annexations have brought in enough new residents to once again make the city the second-largest in Alabama.

Now they just need to get the U.S. government to agree with them.

City leaders plan to cobble together a team of community leaders in advance of the Census count that will be taken next year to make sure that low-income residents, who are historically underrepresented in Census data, stand up to be counted.

"We are going to do every darned thing we can to assure that every countable person in the city of Mobile is accounted for," said Al Stokes, the chief of staff for Mayor Sam Jones.

The city's own population estimate claims that more than 206,000 people live in Mobile. But a new U.S. Census Bureau estimate released Wednesday put that figure at about 191,000.

The Census estimates show Birmingham with about 229,000 people, and Montgomery with about 202,000.

Mobile fell from No. 2 in the state to No. 3 in 2001.

The 15,000-person difference between the Mobile count and federal estimate could be costing Mobile federal funding and business opportunities, said Annette Watters, a researcher at the Alabama State Data Center in Tuscaloosa... Link to Continue Reading

I hope our people are right about the numbers. We need that title for business. It doesn't look good that we are shrinking.

Bridge could transform Mobile shipyard into cargo port

Sunday, July 05, 2009 By KAIJA WILKINSONBusiness Reporter
Bill Harrison III finds it ironic that the thing that has threatened to dismantle his family's 114-year-old business could be the key to its future.

The possibility of an Interstate 10 bridge over the Mobile River has loomed over the city's oldest shipyard since 1996. With momentum growing in the past few months for a route that would take the bridge right over Harrison Brothers Dry Dock & Repair Yard, Harrison began thinking about how his shipyard could fit into the equation.

The proposed route spares the natural harbor on Harrison's 14-acre, horseshoe-shaped property, but comes close enough that the yard would be precluded from performing repairs on vessels containing explosive cargo — a mainstay of its business. One of its pilings would land square in the middle of an apron Harrison built for new construction.

Harrison's solution: Turn the shipyard into a marine terminal that serves small vessels carrying nonhazardous cargo such as lum ber and building materials — "basically, staples going into the Caribbean and South America," Harrison said. The port would get a kick-start, he said, handling materials and housing equipment that would be used in building the bridge. ...

ThyssenKrupp stock price falls on economic worries, collapse of subsidiary sale

Posted by Brian Lyman, Staff Writer July 06, 2009 9:15 AM
Bloomberg News reported Saturday that German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp AG has abandoned the sale of its industrial services unit after buyers pulled out.

The company saw shares slide 2 percent in European trading today over concerns about the world economic slowdown and the reported collapse.

ThyssenKrupp is building a $4.65 billion steel complex in Calvert, on the Mobile-Washington county line.

Bloomberg also reported that the sale of ThyssenKrupp's Xervon chemical unit and Safway, its power plant operation and scaffolding company, could be in trouble because the investment banks managing the sales are no longer offering to finance purchases.

The three units had sales of 1.7 billion euros (about $2.37 billion) in the 12 months ending in September, the company has said.

I believe they are right and I don`t think Tiilmans Corner is part of the city limits which has 15 K. I think they should also look into incorporating the three neighboring Mississippi counties and Washington County ,al into Mobile`s MSA or CSA populations if not atleast Washington County, Al.

Several lower income house holds are holding back I blieve because they fear if they tell the exact numbers they will lose out on Govt assistance. I know the numbers are a little off, becuase I know that Tillmans Corner is fully incorporated now.

the census doesn't do the Metro areas and the CSAs. the office of management and Budget (OMB) says who is in the metros and CSAs. The residental parts of Tillmans Corner are still in the county unincorporated.

But I agree (of course) that Mobile is a lot closer to the 200,000 mark than the the Census thinks.

Thnaks for the info, i think the MSA and CSa should be looked into just as well.Wasgington County and the 3 Mississippi counties make up nice bulk of west Mobile county traffic . Its only right that we should include them and get federal money as well.

Two of those Mississippi counties are already in the Biloxi-Gulfport MSA. I'm not sure we'll be seeing those counties counted in our population totals.

Anyone think the Airbus planes falling out of the sky monthly will have any impact on the tanker decision? I guess it is giving Boeing supporters a little ammunition if nothing else. Mobile does not need anymore incidents involving those planes.

We had (have) a seperate thread for this HOT topic.

But to answer your question, I am a Boeing supporter, but am open minded enough to realize the potential HUGE impact Airbus would bring to the area. That being said, Boeing is having their own problems with the launch of their new 787 Dreamliner. There should definitely not be too much finger pointing right now!

That is apparent!

If a seperate thread exists for that issue it should be used. If it was the other way around, you would be squeeling like a little girl...

The OMB changes the status of counties all the time. they switch them from one metro to the other, creating micro areas and then taking them away and combining 2 metro areas into one. they really don't give much explanation except linking cultures, commuting patterns, and interlinked economies. these things change every year.

The CSA population should be changed. About half of Escambia county works in Mobile & I know that Washington and Shelby do as well. All of Baldwin should be included. I have never understood why Mobile is short handed. Think about it, What is there to do in Escambia, Washington & Shelby county? Where do you shop? You come to Mobile for everything.

It doesn't matter if the counties are already in another metro, they can always be brought in as long as the statistics are there to support the move. In North Alabama, the Decatur Metropolitan Area will probably be dissolved and Morgan and Lawrence county will join the Huntsville Metro, because of daily movement because of jobs.

As long as there are more people working in Mobile county from those counties than work in the ones where Gulfport and Biloxi are, they can be added to the Mobile area.
