Give it time, it's obviously a very preliminary design.

and so we should accept that it is utterly mediocre, out of touch with the current topography and feel of the area

Anyone that thinks that is the actually design is only kidding themselves. Henriquez's design will only be shown once a tender is announced if ever. The current proposal is nothing more then an idea sketch.

Eh... I thought the bridge design shown in the previous page is fine. It's clearly inspired by London's pedestrian-only bridge, which is fine.

To put JLousa's comment in a little more of an educational context, the AIBC forbids architectural firms from doing any design drawings as part of a proposal before a project has been awarded. Since the city is a public entity they have to put the design out on BCBid and so this can't be the Henriquez design so much as a placeholder - although it's very possible this 'placeholder' closely resembles what his idea of the final product will be.

The city can also go to a Design/Bid contract which will allow 3 or 4 firms to be paid for designs, one of which the city will pick. For such a visible project I would guess this is the way they'd go.

Anyone who knows more than me, feel free to correct/repute.

Addition to SoHo Building in Yaletown from the Avision Young website:

http://www.yaletownofficespace.com/1132_hamilton.html

Quote:
1132 Hamilton Street

The Soho Building is one of the premier buildings in Yaletown located at 1132 Hamilton Street between Helmcken and Davie Streets. The building offers prominent frontage on both Hamilton and Mainland Streets providing excellent exposure and a prestigious address. It is currently a three storey concrete, brick and timber office and retail building. The entire building is being completely renovated and seismically upgraded and will feature new HVAC, electrical, security, and fire & life safety systems. Three floors are being added to the existing 27,000 sq. ft. structure providing a total of 50,000 sq. ft. of available premises upon completion.

I like the pedestrian bridge idea, but wouldn't make sense to provide space for cyclists too?

The concept proposal IS for a ped AND cyclist bridge, architype. The term "pedestrian bridge" is just simpler.

The interestring thing about that proposal is that the bridge deck is proposed at 15 ft wide for a two-way bike path and a pedestrian path.
The City has insisted on 3 m bike lanes each way on the Burrard Bridge - those alone are over 18 ft wide.
So the 15 ft width of the pedestrian bridge deck comes down to the standard 1.5 m bike lane each way (although without car traffic adjacent to it).

Are you sure on the 15ft? It should be listed as 15m wide, which puts it at almost the same width as the Lions Gate bridge which as a useable width of 15.6m.

Strange - I originally read 15ft in the newspapers - now every source I check says 15m, but the render looks more like 15 ft.
