EDMONTON — T & T Supermarket Inc. opened the doors to its second Edmonton store Thursday.
A long line of shoppers patiently waited for the opening ceremony — speeches by company officials and politicians and traditional Chinese lion and Filipino pole dances — to end, before quickly filling the 45,000-square foot store in North Town Centre when the doors finally opened.
Cindy Lee, the Richmond, B.C.-based chain’s CEO, said Edmonton’s first store in West Edmonton Mall proved so popular with both ethnic Asian shoppers and non-Asians, it opened a north-side store.
“I remember when I opened our first Edmonton store, my friend warned me that it would be too difficult for T & T to become successful in this city.
“There was too few Asians and also non-Asian families would never come to shop at T & T because the food is quite different. Today, I’m happy to say my friend is wrong.”
T & T, which opened its first store in Vancouver in 1993 named after Lee’s daughters Tina and Tiffany, sells Asian food staples, hot deli meals, produce and seafood.
The opening marks a big day for the redevelopment of North Town Centre at 97th Street and 137th Avenue, said Bill Kennedy, chief operating officer for landlord Anthem Properties.
“We started off with a very tired, disused mall two-and-a-half, three years ago and we’re really ecstatic with what has happened,” he said.
