Flags are good. It is the one true symbol of Canada.

Aside from being pushovers, loving Molson Canadian, Maple Syrup, and beaver tail hats.

Canada has a lot of shortcomings and things that aren't perfect about it, but it's a hell of a lot better than most Countries, in the West and not.

Someone once said that patriot is a unique comination of "patria" and "idiot".

Just kidding; I agree that, in theory at least, there is a difference between being proud of one's country and thinking that one's country is the best simply because you happen to be a citizen. In practice, however, those lines often blur and it's also arguable that patriotism is a prerequisite for nationalism. I guess you could say that partiotism is the gateway drug to nationalism.

I dont want to take this too off topic or argue much but nationalism and patriotism are pretty much the same thing and they are very much exclusive. One can though argue that it creates competition and variation and promotes advancement of the human race(which it does), but I still think its a very dangerous thing in its current form.
There will always be divisions, I mean even Vancouver has east Vancouver west side, south Van, etc. all very really and important divisions for people who grow up in them(they might not have flags but their as real as a incorporated country). But I will stick to my point that the less flags the better, we dont need to promote division.
In the end its just my opinion /rant

That flagpole was from Expo 86 - world's tallest at the time I think - it used to have the world's largest hockey stick leaning on it - but that's now at a hockey arena in Cowichan.

Like Einstein once said "Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind."

I do admit I get a bit nationalistic at times, but I still think that the less flags and other nationalistic symbols out there the better everyone will be off. I mean do you really want to go the path of our neighbors down south?
Better a nationalist than a separatist.

Well they are essentially the same thing, a separatist just disagrees on the borders.

Yup this appears to be the place to discuss downtown updates.

Some good news for Leftside and Jacques.

488 Carrall Street
VHR C(M)
DE #412922

The proposal was received to rehabilitate the storefront of this VHR “C” listed and municipally designated historic site in Chinatown. Some interior alterations, mainly to improve entrances and to better integrate with the Carrall Street Greenway Initiative, which is currently underway, were also proposed. The Conservation Plan has been developed, consistent with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada and Chinatown HA-1 Guidelines for designated sites. The key components of the Conservation Plan are: restoration of granite piers, rehabilitation of the storefront, re-institution of canopies, restoration of the storefront cornice and intermediate string course, restoration of lane windows, and introduction of contemporary signage (banners). The applicant has requested a facade grant of up to $50,000 through the Heritage Façade Rehabilitation Program to offset the cost of rehabilitation work. This application will be presented to Council for approval of façade grant request.

Chinatown Plaza Parkade Neon Lighting Project - Update

In July 2008, City Council approved the budget for this capital improvement project to support the community's effort in bringing neon lighting back into Chinatown. Preliminary design options were developed in fall 2008 and feedback were gathered from the community. Based on the comments, staff had worked on finalizing the design. Staff would like to review the final draft design with this committee for their comments and are aiming to have the sign installed before end of the year.

228 Abbott Street
DE#412957
VHR C(M)

The application was received to rehabilitate principal and lane façades, to remove portion of the second storey floor structure, and to extend existing skylight of this Gastown historic sites. The Conservation Plan consistent with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada and Gastown HA-2 Guidelines has been developed, identifying following conservation procedures:
• Cleaning and repairing all exterior wall surfaces;
• Restoring the upper cornice, simplified pediment, string-course, window heads and storefront cornice;
• Replacing current second-floor windows with single glazed, double- hung wood sash windows, based on archival information;
• Restoring and rehabilitating storefronts and fenestration while preserving the original cast iron columns.
In addition to some structural upgrades, the major building systems mechanical, electrical and fire will also be upgraded. New mechanical equipment proposed to be placed on the roof will not be visible from the street level.
The applicant has requested a facade grant of up to $50,000 through the Heritage Façade Rehabilitation Program to offset the cost of proposed rehabilitation work. This application will be presented to City Council for approval of the façade grant.

Looks like Rize Alliance is going back to the DPB, wonder if they are now ready to proceed, if so this will be one of the most interesting buildings in the core.

Richard's on Richards to close next month
By John Lucas

According to a news release from Richard's on Richards today, the long-running Vancouver night-life institution at 1036 Richards Streets will be gone by the end of next month.

The release reads "Aquilini Investments have given notice to Richard’s on Richards to vacate the premises on July 21, 2009. The building will be demolished late July." In its place, Aquilini will construct a new condominium development.

As for the club, its liquor license has been transferred to 556 Seymour Street (former home of A&B Sound), where a new club will open in mid October. The new establishment promises four lounges, a 5,000-square-foot dance floor, and two art galleries, and will feature dance nights on weekends, with live music relegated to Sunday through Thursday.

Currently seeing lots of buildings undergoing some form of maintenance in Gastown at the moment. May or may not be part of the Heritage Façade Rehabilitation Program. Lot's of buildings along Carrall from Water to Hastings getting some sort of facelift.

The two projects are unrelated.
There's nothing wrong with having access to station entrances through the City's Granville Street construction site.
