Am I wrong, or do we still have no funding for Concept 3, just a concept?

You're right - there's currently no funding for anything other than a few alternative analysis / environmental studies. ARC is going to include Concept3 in their "aspirations plan" for their long-range transportation plan update. Maybe a couple of projects will make it into the "cost-feasible" plan? Some of the intown streetcar projects are fairly low cost when compared to the HRT extensions and new LRT corridors.

Here's an interesting article on the Beltline from Landscape Magazine.

Very nice article -- thanks for posting it. It was interesting to read about someone who grew up in the pre-sprawl Altanta of the 1950s and revisited the area to find glimmers of hope for the future via the beltline project.

I'm always cheering for livable density in Atlanta as someone who has only known the city as a traffic-choked sprawly area and is looking for the kind of positive change the beltline (and other initiatives) will bring. I hadn't really considered that there are people out there who remember a more livable Atlanta that did exist at one time and will return again even better than before.

Terry Montague, ABI CEO, just resigned....

************

Atlanta, GA, May 12, 2009 – Atlanta BeltLine Inc. (ABI) will begin a transition in
leadership from its founding President and Chief Executive Officer Terri Montague who
will depart that position on September 1, 2009. The ABI board will establish a process to
identify a successor, and Montague will continue in a consulting role through the end of
the year to help assure a smooth transition.
“It has been my privilege to serve the City and the BeltLine team in this capacity and to
help the project achieve its early milestones and momentum over these nearly three
years,” said Montague, who was appointed to the position in July 2006. “BeltLine
implementation has come a very long way in a very short time—thanks in part to the
project’s many partners and supporters.”
Over the past three years, the BeltLine has moved forward with:
 acquisition of 4.6 miles of Northeast Corridor Right-of-Way;
 opening of the first mile of trail in the West End;
 breaking ground for Historic Fourth Ward Park;
 funding of the first dollars in the Affordable Housing Trust Fund;
 completion of master plans for five BeltLine sub-areas; and
 land acquisition, planning and design of five BeltLine parks or park expansions.
“We are grateful for Terri’s leadership in taking the BeltLine so far so quickly,” said
Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. Chair Cal Darden. “We are also grateful for her successful
recruiting of directors of Community Engagement, Communications, Design, Finance,
Real Estate and Program Management, comprising a leadership team that will serve the
BeltLine well under her successor.”
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin added: “Terri is smart, thoughtful and has been dedicated
to the success of this innovative public project, which she brought national recognition
and acclaim to. Her reputation for being a critical thinker was important as I sought
someone who could bring that experience to the development of all the complex issues
significant to the Beltline’s success. She has been an invaluable asset to this
administration and to the City and there is no doubt in my mind that the Beltline exists
today because of her leadership.”
“The BeltLine is blessed with not only broad public support but a vast array of public and
private partners who all contribute leadership to this visionary initiative,” said BeltLine
Partnership Chair John Somerhalder. “As Terri has demonstrated, the leader of ABI is
crucial to orchestrating the efforts of such diverse talents and interests. We’re fortunate
to have benefitted from her talents in these critical start-up years.”

What's the current estimate as to when we'll see trolleys or light rail operating on the Beltline? Could it happen within ten years, or are we looking at something several decades out?

Based on what ARC has in their most recent regional transportation plan - the northeast BeltLine quadrant could be constructed between 2014 and 2020 and the other quadrants would follow between 2021 and 2030.

They've programmed a 50/50 New Starts match into the plan - when the federal transportation reauthorization gets redone, they're looking at bumping the federal match up to 80/20. If the funding mix changes, the BeltLine or some of the other transit projects (assuming they can get through the Federal Transit Administration and environmental processes) could get advanced in the timeline.

The project info is here: http://www.atlantaregional.com/documents/tp_rtplist_032009.pdf

Imagine the mutant veggies you could grow at the proposed 'community gardens' located in the GA Power Transmission Corridor...tasty!
The park is one of the stops on the (free) Beltline Tour. Its quite a space and hopefully will soon live up to its potential.

I'll be too busy over at the the Formal Amphitheatre to mess with your seedy garden, dude

After going thru there in the fall of 2007, it's hard to believe it could be transformed from a dusty-old-west wasteland, but hell I'd volunteer to make it that way!

"court sports"? is that tennis/basketball? basketball/handball?

i remember arguing at one of the input meetings for tennis courts as tennis is an unusually popular sport in this city. one of the Beltline people said they weren't sold on having tennis courts since Atlanta already has so many. that didn't make any sense to me. this area doesn't have many tennis courts. there's certainly room in this park.

It is indeed quite a space. So much of that part of the city is almost a blank slate.

Does anyone know whether they are going to allow dogs to ride on the Beltline? The master plan shows an off leash dog park, so there's got to some way to get them there.

One of the rogue tour leaders walked us through the GA Power Lines, crawled under a fence, climbed a hill and BAM!, there we were on the far edge of the quarry.

It's absolutely amazing, and the water in it is so blue. The sheer size of it is astounding.

I hope not, I'm getting sort of tired of dog owners who can't control their dogs and allow them to jump on others

Oh, me, too, that's outrageous.

My dog would never do that, and I wouldn't let her anyway. But if she can't ride the Beltline, how in the heck are we going to get to this dog park?

Use the trail, of course!

jew4life,
Did you go on one of the walking tours led by Angel? Great tours, and Angel is pretty great

Well, 7 or 8 miles each way is a pretty good hike just to let your dog play in the dog park. I don't think many people would be up for that, especially those of us who have trouble walking to begin with.

Well, if you wanted to take transit there, the southern part of the park would be approximately 1/3-mi from MARTA's Bankhead Station.
