Vancouver Paralympics torch design, emblem unveiled

Vancouver Paralympics torch design, emblem unveiled

VANCOUVER — Vanoc, the organizing committee for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, on Thursday unveiled the torch design and emblem for the Paralympic torch relay, the torch bearers uniform and the start point (Ottawa) for the 10-day journey.

But there was no information on how the estimated 600 torchbearers will be chosen or how the public can sign up and no route information or whether communities across the country can lobby to have the relay run through their town.

“We’re working through those elements of the program right now and we’ll come out with an announcement later in the summer, beginning of the fall,” said Jim Richards, who is in charge of torch relays for Vanoc. “We’re working with our partners on the best way to approach this and what is it that meets our objective in terms of really finding those inspirational stories. We want to make sure we tap into those.”

He said say the torchbearers will be a combination of able-bodied and disabled Canadians.

With International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven on hand, Vanoc had a past and a present Paralympian carry the one-metre-long, curved torch — $349 if you’re lucky enough to carry one and want to buy it afterwards — that features the 2010 Paralympic emblem and is engraved with the Games’ motto “With Glowing Hearts.”

The uniforms — “steel blue in colour and accented with bright bursts of blue and green on the jacket’s left arm” — were accented with the torch relay emblem, which supposedly shows a human figure with its raised and joined, but basically just looks like a red, blue and orange flame.

Since no Paralympic Games in Canada followed the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics or the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, this will be the first Paralympic torch relay held in this country.

It has also been announced that the 10-day Paralyampic relay will begin at the nation's capital in Ottawa, and about 600 torchbearers will carry the flame to Vancouver.
