Any updated insight on opening day? I know it will definitely be open by Labour Day (as per the website now as well), but word had it at one point that it would actually be open by 01Aug. Anyone have any updated inside scoop?

^ inside rumours still are that it will open earlier (Aug. 1/BC Day weekend) than the early Labour Day date.

I was thinking about that - if the Canada Line opens August 1st, does that mean bus schedules change completely on that day as well? Or would they have the month of August before all the scheduled bus route changes occur? Translink has just been telling so many people to prepare for September changes. Wouldn't a soft opening kinda screw it up?

Nonetheless, I hope it opens a month early. That would be awesome!

um... August 1st? if the canada line opens on that day, the bus schedules will be changed, you can see 99 B-Line... it was going to north Burnaby from UBC before Millennium Line opened in 2002.

98 B-Line will be removed.

A soft opening B.C. Day Weekend would make sense if all systems are go on that date, because it gives Intransit B.C. a full month to work out any kinks before the fall commuter crush. Translink could still roll out the bus integration after Labour Day because August tends to be the least busy commuting time of the year.

Most likely a "soft" opening in August, with bus schedule changes effective Labour Day weekend. So we'll have the trains and B-line, express buses running side-by-side in August. Gives InTransit the opportunity to iron out kinks in the system. My guess is the b-line will be quiet - mainly local trips on Granville when Canada Line opens.

When the original Skytrain opened in the 1980s, the trains originally didn't run on Sunday (or at least Sunday morning) - dedicated buses operated at this time. I think this was mainly technical and operational due to the nature of the linear induction technology.

Wouldn't it be funny if they didn't even announce the opening... just one day open the gate and put an open for business sign up? I wonder how long it would take for people to realize it was open?

Is the Oakridge mall electronic sign in front of the station going to be demolished? It's blocking the view of the station entrance.

soft opening? on august? what is the soft opening about? just open the skytrain station and the trains does not run?

i remember in Taiwan, the High Speed Railway Station was opening before the trains runs...

was that soft opening? if not, what was that?

A soft launch or soft opening is basically starting service without a big huge announcement. It might still be subject to changes and such, but would be operating before the official launch date given earlier. The trains would be running, I imagine. What's the point if they aren't?

That being said, this is all rampant speculation. Even if ProTrans is ready to go on August 1st, it might not open until Labor Day like they had said previously.

I think Translink has really dropped the ball on communication design. I think the negative criticism with regards to the signage inconsistencies has already been stated. I don't like the map. Like many subway maps it is geographically inaccurate, which would be fine if the map just displayed transit lines, but it looks like this map is also showing bus routes. Bus routes run on streets which should be geographically accurate. Also it fails to show zone information, the Canada Line should be shown in red and personally I think it looks boring and ugly. All Translink signage should have the same graphic identity; seriously it looks like the Canada Line isn't even part of Translink.

^ well it technically isn't part of Translink, though we would argue here that it should be (or that Translink should've designed the signage).

Translink didn't design the Canada Line signage, it was InTransitBC (SNC-Lavalin).

The map will look so much better if they either remove all the parks and waters, or at least trying to make it more geographically accurate. At least make the loop on 97 smaller, move Mission out of the map (with an arrow pointing to it), move the 99 closer to the 84, and the worst of all.. there's so much white space in Richmond, why can't they move Steveston south a little bit?

Oh wait, looking closer Translink made those signs in the middle of the concourse. Odd that they made those but didn't make the wayfinding signs.
