thats not correct....everyone is being rebuild from what I remember.

Yeah, the structures that Hwy 1 utilizes itself (not the structures overpassing Hwy 1) will be expanded between west of Grandview Hwy.

The piers were built to add another future lane.

I recall seeing an old BC Department of Highways annual report from the early 1960's at UBC and the "ultimate" expansion of Hwy 1 was 6 lanes west of Grandview Hwy and 8 lanes east of Grandview Hwy through Burnaby to the Gaglardi interchange. That was the original 45 years+ design.

That's the reason why the overpasses along Hwy 1 in Burnaby have a wider configuration between the piers.

As an aside, the 401 in Toronto has a 14-lane cross section over Hoggs Hollow Bridge and the bridge structure also incorporates the original bridge built in 1929.

Being old is one thing, being above capacity is another.

Old overpasses can be reinforced and can last, but replacing every single overpass would turn Gateway into a white elephant IMO.

I believe the only ones being completely replaced are the ones with capacity and design issues: Brunette, Cape Horn, 152nd, 160th and 176th. The exit lanes at Grandview, Willingdon, Canada/Kensington/Sprott are being reconfigured as well.

Gaglardi, 1st Ave, Hastings, McGill etc. don't need to be replaced IMO.

That means the city had grown ~25% in the decade prior to 1929. Also, back then, the city didn't include the metro area (though I don't know how much it DID include)

I'm sure that bridge was built under the auspices of continued growth at that rate. The population of Toronto back then is close to what Vancouver (city) is now. If a new freeway was planned today for Vancouver, given the current anticipated growth, what kind of ultimate capacity would it be designed for? It's safe to say that Toronto's growth at the turn on the 20th century is akin to Vancouver's at the cusp of of the 21st.

The bridge isn't that old. It's still got many good years left if they were to leave it standing... along side the new 10 lane bridge lol. That would be funny. Then people's complaints about us turning into "another Los Angeles" might make a bit more sense

OK, the old bridge is going to be destroyed after the new one opens, just the same as with the Pitt River Bridges and the Kelowna Bridge.

And there never will be mass transit on the main bridge deck of the new Port Mann, instead this new bridge is designed to hold a lower deck that can be built below the main deck, that is where any future mass transit would be located.
