I think this could be a great pitch picture for the Olympics in Chicago.

New dorm with room for 1,200 students moves forward
BY PETER SACHS
June 18, 2009 | 3:35 PM

Plans for a new Loop dormitory with rooms for more than 1,200 college students got the nod from the Chicago Plan Commission today but still face skepticism from one powerful alderman.

...“I’ve received a number of letters from community people saying, ‘There’s too many dorms here.’ They feel threatened,” Fioretti told the commission. “We’re going to now have 1,200 beds alongside the other dorm and alongside Roosevelt’s dorm.”

...“We’ve got a series of problems, issues, challenges presented by schools, and 1,200 beds will present some serious challenges,” Fioretti told the Plan Commission, singling out graffiti in the area, which he said drops off in the summer months when students go home.

He said he would keep the project from passing the council’s zoning committee until the developers find a university to lease the dorm.

Anyone else remember Fioretti promising to encourage the growth of the universities and specifically the student population as vital to the identity and health of the South Loop? What a slippery eel.

Really Fioretti? Are you completely devoid of any intelligence whatsoever? Does Fioretti really think that College students vandalize property and are graffiti artists? Sorry bumblefuck, that's not who is vandalizing your precious ward...

This — makes me so angry, he can hardly construct a comprehensible sentence, let alone a legitimate argument. IIRC graffiti drops across the city in the summer because there are more people out and about. More people walking around deters vandals because there are more people watching. How did this pathetic fool get elected?

Threatened by college kids? Hmmmm...the city has gang warfare and this is where he draws the line.

— ridiculous.

Very slightly less pathetic and foolish than his predecessor.

What a tool.....is this what we can expect from our 2 central area clowns.....Reilly and Fioretti......

Who feels threatened? Columbia and Depaul students are menaces to society ....we all know....

Threatened ....either this guy is an absolute —......or if there really have been letters that express feeling threatened by college students then those people are tools.....and I invite them ...no...admonish them to crawl back from whence they came

Hmmm, college kids coming in buying luxury/dispensable items with mom and pops money, filling restaurants and using taxis, and attracting foreign talent...gotta keep that stuff in check.

Note to Mr. Fioretti: The Loop's gradual transformation from central business district to bona fide neighborhood depends, to some degree, on a healthy student population. If anything, we need more students downtown.

^ Ditto - either Fioretti is pandering again or he is just a dim, dim bulb. More students in The Loop = more people on the streets after-hours = lower crime rates overall.

I wouldn't say this statement is 100% accurate. I know first hand there are quite a few graffiti "hobbyists" that attend the art and design schools like the AI and Columbia, and tagging and sticker bombing would and does decrease when many of them head home for the summer break.

^ Wow, still more great pics, and from a project we haven't been seeing much of here. You even got the beach shadow in on that last one.

Still, seems like any expense in removing the tags would be more than offset by the benefits accruing from a larger 24/7 student presence in The Loop.
