Most people here are probably basing UBC's design based on current bus ridership figures and the number of buses that run to the loop everyday.

However, we must also keep in mind that if and when a Millennium Line station opens at UBC a lot of that bus traffic will be reduced, especially on the busy Broadway corridor were many users will want to switch into a faster mode of transport. Taking that into effect the number of buses needed will fall dramatically.

And when will that be? 2015? 2020? 2025? The M-Line was planned to be done by 1996. The UBC line isn't even planned. It's more a "potential future line" that has had little or no work done on implementing a system (previous studies stopped at Arbutus)

That's a long time from now.

As far as i understand Translink is releasing a pair of studies in the fall on the 2 planned transit lines ( U.B.C. & Surrey).

Has anyone seen the new skytrain cars in full service , because it will take a while to get all the bugs worked out . At least 1\2 of them are supposed to be in service for the return to work & school on Sepr 8th.

So, given that they will likely not do anything (except another study) until 2013 (election year)... we can expect it at the earliest 2020.

And hate to break it to you, but ALL politicians are liars. Just some are better at covering their tracks than others.

Can't blame Translink for this one, this is all UBC. Translink is trying to make the best of it and they aren't thrilled about it to say the least. Perhaps this is UBCs way of handicapping the system to help ensure the M-Line extension comes all the way into campus.

I don't see why UBC would be doing something so expensive. It doesn't make any sense.

^ i believe the last estimated cost figure for the underground terminal was $30-million, which i highly doubt is sufficient even for this inadequate bus loop. The biggest cost, however, would be put on those who actually use it.

Isn't UBC in debt already? I don't know, I honestly think this money would be better used for upgrading the current terminal instead. I realize that UBC wants more space for buildings, but at least have it so that it can be integrated with the future UBC Line, whether it's LRT or SkyTrain. Just wait a few more years.

^ not sure about the debt, but the money for the new loop would likely come from the endowment. Translink definitely won't be contributing to it, that's their way of giving the university a middle finger for building a sub-par facility for them to use.

Ideally, i'd like to have a two-level transit station. The first underground level would be the bus platforms, ticketing concourse for SkyTrain, waiting area for buses, and from the ticketing concourse/waiting area for buses there would be a mass of escalators and staircases to the second underground level - the SkyTrain platform.

Inspired by the MTR.

...except both levels there would be train platforms. :p

The 7-platform bus terminal COULD work but ONLY IF SkyTrain (and NOT LRT) is extended all the way to UBC.

Honestly, I don't think it would work even if SkyTrain would be built. It's most likely IN THE WAY of the ideal station location... not to mention it won't have a decent connection from the Bus Terminal platform to the SkyTrain platform.

^ lol, well i'm not sure why UBC seems to be in such a rush to build the new underground terminal. It would be more ideal if they waited for the new rapid transit rail line...then again, that could be decades at this rate. :p

But there's absolutely nothing wrong with the existing temporary bus terminal.

The 7-platform bus terminal could work if SkyTrain is also built as much of the bus ridership would be transplanted into SkyTrain.
