Rather than spending money on a trophy library for suburbanite drivers that makes it much harder for transit-dependent patrons to use it, perhaps 10% of that money could have been spent acquiring long-term leases for those office workers with a block or two and then the full space could actually be utilized.

But, no. We always take people at their word when they say they need more. Turn off your critical thinking, folks!
But it isn't an adequate library for a metro area of our size - it's not a terrible library, but we need a major expansion or a new one altogether. It's about the size of the Capitol Hill branch library in Seattle, that's a bit pathetic. There is a middle ground between a "trophy library" and the brutalist half-pint that we call our flagship branch.

I believe the T. Stacy towers will look different than the renderings. Those were of the old design. When they announced the new upgraded version, they never did release any renderings on that. My thinking is they wont untill they are closer to a groundbreaking date. I do hear that it is still on, but just on hold at the present time.

I agree completely - the aspect of the new library that I find most disturbing is not the architecture but the location. However, the talking point that the old library was out of space can't go unchallenged - or we'll make the same mistake again in a few years when somebody doesn't like the new old library.

Turns out a building that actually used all its space for library functions rather than offices could easily support twice the books and twice the computers that the current library does; the real impetus was to get in a site that would be easier for suburbanites to park at (a plan I'd normally even be sympathetic to if it didn't also come with a drastic decline in transit accessibility - one that won't be resolved by moving bus routes to meet it).

Because so many people bought the BS about the old library being too small because of where it was, in other words, nobody seriously explored knocking it down; building underground parking; putting up a nicer building; and using it all for books and computers instead of offices. That would have led to a better-looking better-functioning library that solved the parking issue and still maintained good transit access.

Looks like The Austonian has officially topped the Frost Tower (I believe its been that way for at least a week or two). This is from The Austonian's website:

...and getting close to the spire of 360 (if not already there):

I'm not sure actually. I do believe that first one I posted is an official rendering. It's been a while since it was originally posted, so I can't remember where it came from. Does anyone remember who found that first rendering?

This one I mean:

Great! I'm looking forward to it. I need to fix a flat on my bicycle and go take some photos too. We just lost our family dog and cat (both died within 8 days) this month. Getting out and riding would do me some good. I've just been so down about it.

Those pictures really take in what the Austonian can do, especially the 1st and 2nd photos.

() T, do you know why there are some empty glass spaces in the middle of the Austonian in the 3rd picture?

Those are the glass doors for the outdoor patios on each unit of the Austonian. They are open, I don't know why.

I'm not sure about who found that rendering but it has to before May 18, 2007 that one of the members around this forum found that rendering. I know that because in the T. Stacy thread, You posted the rendering on that date, and it seems that that wasn't the first post of it because your way of speech in there did not sound like you just found it.

Thanks for the info. Maybe to let fresh air in or let the dust come out from their working?

It has been taking a really long time for the 49th floor. Does look like today's the big day though.

If the cement center elevator shaft things count. Austin has a new tallest building.
