Well we are definitely not talking about the same project then, the one I was thinking of is definitely an office tower. About the only project that comes to mind for me would be Cosmo, but I don't think you would be so secretive about that project... although it is almost sure to have a protruding box.

It's a yet unannounced project, and it's still early in the process, don't expect any official announcement for close to a year. They are aiming for ~400ft range. It's a stand alone project but hopefully part of something larger...

Hey guys, just saw the plans for a new highrise project. Can't say much right now but it is in the 45-50 storey range in Coal Harbour... it wont be the biggest in the city, but if they had built it a few years ago it would have been

Amacon? With construction prices down and the office rates in Vancouver being praised by the guys over on wall street, I'd guess now would be the perfect time to build an office structure.

Being that it's at Coal Harbour, I'm going to guess it's a condo tower

Amacon was suposed to be developed beside Melville from what I recall. And while I thought that area was what was reffered to as "Triangle West," I've also heard it being included in the overall Coal harbour district.

Not related to Leftcoaster's post above, but noticed this in Malcolm Parry's column this morning:

YOUNG KING COAL: The late and reclusive magnate Howard Hughes occupied two sealed-off floors of the Bayshore Hotel in early 1972. Now, local billionaire-in-the-making Ian Gillespie may take all of them. Word is the city-based big-projects developer (Shangri-La, Woodwards) is kissin' close to a deal on the ultra-choice Coal Harbour property.

Note there is some residual density down there, so they may be buying it with the intention to redevelop the property with a couple new buildings in the next few years.

^ Very interesting, I'm sure there is somebody here who knows something about that deal... I wonder if he is planning on doing something to the Weston or transferring the density to another site.

I take the hint that it will be a condo tower...

Will the massing be similar to that of Shaw or Fairmont? Or a skinny tower?

I think there is actually 2 towers still to be developed in the current plan. But I imagine the plan would be to buy the hotel and start from scratch.

Given the well-used conference facilities at the Bayshore, I would be surprised if the whole hotel was demolished for a purely condo development.

There are (or were) multiple development scenarios, some of which anticipated adding residential in addition to hotel in 1 or 2 towers. In any case, the hotel/conference facilities would be retained as they've put a substantial amount into interior renos.

If they were to redevelop, the most likely scenario is a mid-rise slab hotel tower where the lobby is located and a mid-rise residential tower on the SW corner of the hotel. The least likely scenario envisioned a 27-storey residential-above-hotel where the lobby is.

The current Bayshore masterplan only calls for 65 more rental units, so any additional residential would require an amendment which would add a ton of time to development.

wouldnt bayshore be too far west for a tall building considering how the city wants a dome-shaped skyline?

i wonder if it could be the redevelopment of the renaissance hotel.

The Renaisance is almost done a very major reno, I don't beleive they plan on going anywhere for a while.

I can't comment too much on the Bayshore, but one of the above posters pretty well nailed the current proposal, the developer has some unused density in the bank and the city is keen on bringing the bank balance down to more reasonable levels. Either way it's a ways away and there is nothing solid, don't be surprised to see a jkmc design

So I'm guessing something Hotel Georgia-ish in height? ~155-160m perhaps? I'm not actually expecting you to answer.

At any rate it sounds like Vancouver will be getting some nice towers next round. We've got a ~400ft tower, a ~510ft tower, LeftCoaster's office tower, ~510ft Amacon office tower perhaps, and there is at least one other ~500ft tower being looked at I'm aware of, not in Coal Harbour.

Thats alot of potential. Even if one or two poke their heads out within the next little while it'll be good for us, and excellent for the city to show that we're out of the reccession.
