Gallivan:

I think they need to push the building as far south as possible to open the site up more. Either that or just make minor adjustments and move the large scale events somewhere else. The Gallivan has grown up into something that is far from the original intent. Anyone who has tried to move around at one of the concerts or other event (like the beer fest) knows how crowded it is.

Personally I would love to see a Millenium Park style ampitheater on a smaller scale built downtown, either at Gallivan, Pioneer park, Library Square or on some vacant parking lot. The Twilight concert series and other large scale events could be held in this type of venue versus the cramped, cut up existing gallivan that just does not hold these types of events very well anymore. I think this change is a good thing for the City, as it is a sign of it's growing up and becoming more of an urban environment.

Glad to see the much needed tweaking of the Gallivan. However, you are soooo right Cololi, I couldn't agree with you more.

I think the arrangement at Gallivan Plaza should look something like this:

Or this:

That is the general concept I was talking about. You could also put the stage and building in the southeast corner and place it an angle so that the main stage would be visible from Main and 200 South. if the design was exceptional, you could also dress up the south face of it so it was visible from State St. I think you could use much more drought tolerant grass so the space could be more useful for active use when events aren't going on.

Salt Lake City releases bond to build Leonardo

Salt Lake City releases bond to build Leonardo
The Salt Lake Tribune http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_12556891
Updated: 06/09/2009 08:41:36 PM MDT

The Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday approved the sale of the long-awaited $10.2 million property-tax bond to build The Leonardo at Library Square.
Voters approved the funds in 2003. But the science, culture and education center stalled for years, mostly due to problems raising private funds. Salt Lake City will renovate the former Main Library building to house The Leonardo, which is expected to open in early 2011.
"I'm smiling like a Cheshire Cat over here because this is one of our last steps in building The Leonardo," Councilman Luke Garrott said after the 6-0 vote. "This is a great day for Library Square. It's a great day for our city."
The property-tax bond will add $5.97 to the annual tax bill on a $250,000 home. Commercial-property owners will fork over an exra $43.40 on a $1 million parcel.

I like this version you put there, Urban Boy. It hides the garage and acts more of the backdrop to the rest of the plaza, which is much more open now. I really like that. I think you've got the best solution that I've seen. I might take out those trees in front for concert overflow. And I might take out those shades over the ice rink area, and move them somewhere else for summertime use. Btw, how did you creat those sketchup images? It looks almost exactly like the ones posted by the architect, except that you changed them a little.

That's great news!! Are there any renderings or plans of the latest version?

Police HQ saga gets new twist

Downtown » Corroon says county and city could team up and put police and prosecutors in the same building.

Instead of hunting for a Salt Lake City public-safety headquarters and a District Attorney's Office downtown, the city and Salt Lake County should pursue a joint real-estate venture that combines those buildings into one.

So suggested County Mayor Peter Corroon, who talked Tuesday of a complex in Utah's capital that puts not only prosecutors and police officers in a single location near the Scott Matheson Courthouse but also the state's emergency-operations center.

"We are all talking about budgets," Corroon said hours after announcing plans to cut nearly $5 million in county spending. "It makes sense right now."

This could mean a bigger, more substantial building for downtown SLC!! Putting it by the courthouse would be great, also. You could put it on the east side of Main between 4th and 5th south, on the back side of the state courthouse, only if the height doesn't block the view of the City/County building.

That's exactly where I thought the Police HQ, sans DA office, should have gone in the first place.

I was thinking the same thing. If they put the stage in the corner and oriented it diagonally, it would make the stage visible to many more attendees to the various concerts and festivals.

Hurray!

Library Square remains a place of intellectual discovery and we get a new police headquarters downtown. I think that this is the best scenario ever!!!

warning: last part exaggeration, to overly polarized left and right wingers there was no political undertones meant to be taking by the said statement. I am sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

I agree, I think putting it by the courthouse is the best location, since it's not a pedestrian-influenced area.

While I was opposed to the idea of placing it on Library Square, I accepted -- though didn't like -- the area across the street. I felt that place was more ideal than the Library Square, even though it still had its flaws.

This location, however, leaves that area to more residential and retail growth. So I am inclined to support this fully.

Geothermal

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2009/06/09/ap6523178.html

I know this is talking about a different project all together but do you think this means SLC could be one step closer to getting it's geothermal power plant?

If I'm not mistaken, the current stage houses the HVAC for the One Utah building and the parking garage. Because it would be unfeasible to move the huge vents located inside the stage, some structure will need to occupy that space. I think leaving the stage where it is makes the most sense.

Hey Orlando, to answer your question, I just use a simple program called skitch that can be downloaded from the internet. Although I think the application is only compatible with mac.

Hey guys, lets stop the crazy talk please. That parking lot belongs to EARL HOLDING. How does building a public safety building there benefit him??
